In a couple of days I will be embarking on a trip out West to see an alternative medicine doctor. The trip will consist of one day of air travel, 1 day of car travel, 2 days with the doctor, another day of car travel, and another day of air travel. I am very nervous about this trip. I am semi-terrified of air travel, even though I fly at least 3-4 times a year. I will probably take a small amount of xanax to try and stay calm for this portion, but I doubt it will be enough. I am also nervous about the extensive car travel (makes me dizzy) and the likelihood that I'll become sick during or after this trip. I am on a (large) number of supplements, but it seems that I always get sick during these adventures. It was after my last trip out West to see my parents that I became home-ridden for over a month. I'm so worried this will happen again. Fortunately, my pain and fatigue are mostly under control. I'm just concerned about the anxiety, dizziness, flying, and possibility of getting sick. Any tips, thoughts, or prayers for this short but intense trip would be greatly appreciated. Even just some reassurance? Thanks so much.

Hi Nannen! Nice to meet you!

I honestly don't know too much about any TIPS because I don't travel often. BUT reassurance I can certainly do for you=]

I know it is hard to do but just try not to worry so much (easier said than done I know) and it's going to sound dumb but think happy and positive thoughts! lol really! It'll help. And I would definately take that xanax to help you with that anxiety before you leave. Don't think about what happened BEFORE (you said you were home-ridden after you went to see your parents), it'll only make you scared. Focus on NOW, and try to stay calm.

My thoughts will be with you and I will sure be hoping that everyone is alright!!!

Hi nanen...don't know if the kind of sickness you are talking about is motion related but I have an inner ear disorder that makes me nauseous and dizzy while traveling...I take Ginger root before anykind of long travel and it works for me.  My hubby teaches for the military and I and got this tip from one of his students that is a pilot...he swears by it!

Hi Nanen.

I don't have any tips for ya unfortunately.  I don't travel much either. But I will definitely keep you in my prayers and hope that your trip goes without any hitches!  I think the xanax idea is a good one actually...I have anxiety issues too and that would be my course of action.

All the best and good luck!  I hope it goes really well for you!

Thanks so much for your replies. JCGurl, thanks for encouraging me to not focus on what happened before and your thoughts. I think that will help. Vestabula, do you mean dried ginger root or fresh? I've heard there are several ways to consume ginger root. Do you just chew it up to get the juices and throw away the remaining string-like parts? That's what I've done in the past. Ginny, thank you for your thought and well-wishes. Thanks again to you all for replying and your kind words. :)

Hi, Nannen!  I do travel frequently and from what I was reading in your post my best advice to you would be to relax!  You didn't have a positive statement in the whole post so you are dwelling on all the negative things you THINK will happen.  None of us know the future so you don't know for sure all of these things will happen.  But, you are worrying about them ahead of time which is causing stress in your body which is causing more pain.  This type of thinking seems to become a self-fullfilling prophecy.

Think about all the good reasons you are going on the trip.  Think about all the new sights you'll see on your car trips.  Be sure to stop every couple of hours, though, and walk around so you don't get so stiff.  Also, print out a copy of the gentle stretching exercises that are in the Fibro 101 thread...second thread on the forum...and take them with  you.  These can be done in the car and on the airplane and that will help you stay more flexible and in less discomfort.

Lastly, take a good book or some hand held games that passes the time.  I have a Nintendo DS Lite that I love.  I bought Clubhouse Games for it.  There are over 40 games to play and I use this on flights.  Before you know it, you are there!

So, think positively.  There must be a good reason to go on this trip so focus on that abd have a great time!

Hi Nannen-

Wish I could help on this but I have not done any extensive travel since getting fibro. It is going to be an adventure I'm sure.

I have a HUGE fear of flying also and I hope with some Xanax it will go alright for you. Let us know how it went-

Nannen...I take ginger root capsules that you can get almost anywhere.  I take three a day before I leave, then continue on the trip.  I went on a dive boat a while back and I was the only person on the boat that was not throwing up, including the captain!

hugs,
