I started taking B complex, extra B12, multi vit and co q10 several months ago and gained 10 lbs in just a few weeks, which is not normal for me. Then I got busy with the holidays and Ken's health problems and became very lax about taking my vitamins and my weight stayed the same even over the holidays. A couple weeks ago I got back into taking the co q10 and B vitamins, especially the B12 trying to get more energy. I got on the scales this morning and about fell over, I've gained almost 4 lbs in the last couple weeks smhair I'm suppose to be trying to lose weight. I have never gained weight that fast in my life, not even when I was pregnant. I think it is time for my full blood workup which I will have done on the 16th and thyroid is part of that but if it was thyroid I wouldn't have gained 10lbs and then stopped for a few months and started again.

So now I'm wondering if the co q10 or B12 is turning everything I eat into fat. It sure isn't giving me any extra energy.

Thanks!!!! Just wondering if anyone else had noticed this.

luv and hugs

Golly, Marlee, I don't take those vitamins.  I tried to do a search.  Some sites said you gained weight on co Q10 but other sites said it helps with weight loss.  So, I guess you better talk to your doctor about it.  Wish I could be of help.

Well Miss Marlee I don't know but an interesting point. I have been a pencil my entire life until the vitamins. Now I had not thought about it being vitamins but have wondered about the gain. I have absolutely noticed it in the past few months. Could this be????

This thought alone makes me want to stop my vitamins.

I would imagine that some vitamins would make you want to eat more, but never knew that they could cause you to gain weight.  And continue to gain.  I have gained a couple of pounds but I think it was from the holidays.  Now we have Valentines Day and Easter coming.  More food holidays.

Have a great day.

Hmmmm. I have never been a big vitamin-supplement fan, but have been taking them since November. I, too, have a wierd weight gain, really fast- at least 15 pounds. I was really proud of myself for taking a B complex and a multi vitamin, hoping that I was doing something good for myself and my metabolism. Now I'm not so sure. I think we have a new research topic here. Lets look into it and get back with each other about what we learn collectively. If research isn't your thing, thats yea for me :) I LOVE research. Marlee, ^5 to you for bringing this to our attention. Let me make sure I have all the types of supplements that were reported here: B12; multi vitamin; co Q10; B complex. Any others?

Interesting to read all the replys Marlee-

I have always taken a multivitamin, but I have been on B-12 subl. for about 2 months now and I have gained weight. I always put on at least 5 pounds over the winter, but I have gained 13 pounds! I've had more fatigue over the winter months so I'm not burning the calories either. We'll see when spring and summer get here when we get a little more active, if the pounds keep piling on or not. Yikes! I hope not!

Hmmm, I am surprised at all the replies. If I hadn't stopped and starting taking them again I wouldn't have thought of the vitamins being the cause. Sera, have at it and do all the research you want. I use to love doing research but now my brain doesn't retain info long enough to do anything.

I can't afford to gain anymore the jeans are getting too tight and I will not go up a size.

Ugghh!!  I hope we don't find out that vitamins cause weight gain.  I just started taking a multi-vitamin, Mg/Malic Acid, and Vitamin D regularly, AND I just joined Weight Watchers.  If the vitamins cancel out all of the hard work I'm doing with WW, I'm going to be so mad! nono

If anybody finds any good research on the subject, please keep us posted. :-)

I have taken multiple vitamins and calcium and vitamin D for years...even during the times I lost weight.  These particular vitamins never caused a weight gain for me.  But, I don't know about B12 or co q10.

I have noticed a weight gain over the last few weeks after getting serious about taking my vitamins/calcium etc..  I'm not taking extra B's - just a multiple, extra Vit D, Fish Oil, Magnesium and Calcium.  I've been trying to figure out what is causing the weight gain, besides winter inactivity.  Your post jogged my memory.  This happened the last time I started taking multiple vitamins and minerals (concentrated) a couple years ago.  I mentioned it to my massage therapist and she said she knows a couple people, her husband included, who won't take vitamins because they gain weight on them.  I'd forgotten until this post!  I'm going to go back off and see what happens.  I just don't understand the "why" of it!

K I will add Vitamin D and Fish Oils to the list. I'll see if there may be a combo that causes weight gain. Also- of everyone who responded, as anyone not in cold weather?

Well I just started to really get serious about losing weight again and thought I was doing myself a favor by buying a multi vitamin. I am not going to continue taking it though. Can't afford to gain. My heart and b/p are at risk these days. Gotta get the weight off. Thanks for the topic Marlee. I will continue to follow up on this!

I've blamed my weight gain on everything but vitamins: inactivity, stress eating, drug side effects, etc. But, I got serious about taking my vitamins again this fall when I had to go back on Vit D by prescription (50,000ius weekly, on top of my daily 1000 ius supplement). I take a multi, vitamin C, Calcium, and Omega - 3s. No standalone B vitamins yet.

If you all find a vitamin I can take to LOSE weight, by all means, PLEASE let me know!!!!
Still learning how to manage my Fibromylagia, and all the lovely gifts it brings.
I had severe spinal stenosis, had fusion done on C5-7, and my life has changed.

It makes sense that excess B vitamins turn carbohydrates into fat. But I wouldn't worry about other vitamin supplements necessarily. Maybe check with a Naturopath or other health care professional about each thing that you're taking.
(I take SEVERAL supplements - not any B's though - but I take COQ10...never gained any weight and I've gone "off and on" as well)
I have Fibromyalgia, and nothing else!
I take Lyrica 225 mg/day and Tramadol (150mg time-released) and amytriptilene 7.5mg

Hi K9,

I did a post a few days ago to see how you are. Did you have your surgery? I sure hope you are fine.

So glad to see you answered this post.

You know, this idea is just a supposition.  I did a web search and didn't find any evidence that vitamin supplements can cause weight gain.  I checked my favorite sites, the Mayo Clinic and the National Institute of Health, too.  I hate to see some give up something that is very good for you.  Most of us don't get the vitamins we need in today's diets.  And, if we are on a diet, it REALLY is difficult to get all the vitamins you need.  Our systems are more compromised than most people's also.

I know that after I entered menopause it becamse more difficult to lose weight and I could gain weight eating what I used to eat without gaining more weight.  I've had a weight problem nearly all of my life and I can gain weight at a drop of a hat.  But I have never seen any correlation between vitamin supplements and weight gain.

Everything I read says that this is a good thing...especially if you aren't getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs.  I know I have to take a lot of vitamin D and I'm still deficient!  So, please talk to your doctors before you throw the vitamin supplements out the window.
