Hi Pr glo,

It sounds like you are new to the fibromyalgia forum, so I would like to extend to you a warm welcome.  I think that you will like it here, there are so many wonderful members on here.

I have never taken amytriptaline (sp), elavil, but I know that it can cause weight gain if you aren't careful.  But everybody is different so it might not effect you in that way.  I would go by, if it isn't broke don't fix it.  If 50mg is working for you, I would stick to it.  Being that the doctor said take one or two, I would only take two if you can't sleep or something.  I understand that elavil helps with pain and helps pain medications work better.  I really hope that it continues to work well for you.

Keep posting, we love new members.

Gentle hugs,
Karen

Hi Pr glo!

And welcome to our little fibro family!! You'll find this to be a very warm and welcoming group here. Glad you are joining us.

I tried amitriptylin a while back and it didn't do anything for me. I fight cravings for sugar and carbs but that's been most all of my life so I'm not sure I would be able to tell if it affected me that way. It didn't help with the fibro but some people get great results. I sure hope it continues for you!

Hi PR GLO and Welcome!

I have not taken Amitriptyline but it sounds like it is helping with your sleep. If you start to notice any weight gain then I would talk to your Dr. about it. Hope it continues to work for you and I know there will be others here to give you some input.

Nice to meet you!

Hi Pr Glo and welcome. I have been on 100 mg of amitriptyline for probably 11 yrs now. Okay, I'm 58 and in menopause and have the mid life spread going on but I have not gained a great deal from amitriptyline. I do crave sugar and carbs and have been working on the sugar. But I come from a family of sweet eaters, my dad couldn't eat a meal without having dessert after. You just don't know how it is going to effect you til you are on it for awhile. I do know that I tried to cut down last spring cause I didn't think the ami was doing anything for me and after a few weeks went into the flare from hades. Burning searing pain all over my body for two weeks, I went back up to 100 right away and haven't had that kind of pain since. It also causes dry mouth which I sure don't need with sjogrens but you have to weigh the side effects against the benefits on all meds.

I'm glad it is helping you sleep. None of us wants to add anymore weight to carry around so I hope you don't gain.

luv and hugs

Hey there PR Glo!!
Welcome!!!!!
I take it.. and so far so good!! I've been battling weight issues for years, first I was too thin.. NOW, well lets just say I'm no longer so thin!! But the weight was an issue before I started taking amitrip. I just started taking it about a month ago and I think it's finally starting to kick in. My pain seems to be subsiding and the morning stiffness has improved!! I haven't experienced the sweet craving thing but I've never been a big sweet freak to begin with.
Again, welcome and take care,
Patti

Hmmm Patti, never thought about it helping morning stiffness although I have wondered why I didn't have the morning stiffness so many have. I was on ami when I got fibro for anxiety so I don't know life with fibro without it. Maybe that is why it took so long for the pain to get bad enough for me to go to the doc for it, it took an all out flare.

luv and hugs
