What does chostochondritis feel like?  I keep getting weird feeling throughout my chest area and through my upper shoulders.  I can touch my sternum and it is extremely tender.  Could it be costo or is it just normal fibro crap?

Sounds like it could be costo Meg. I have a tender spot at the end of my sternum that seems like it has been there forever now. Besides just general soreness of the ribs I get a feeling of something being too tight around me, especially in the bra area and I rarely wear a bra. I have so many tender areas around me that I don't know what is costo, fibro or MPS anymore.

Sounds like it, Meg.  I have it more often than not.  I have a little dog that likes to stand on my chest, when I'm laying down.  She stares me in the face and gives me a little lick on the nose.  Hurts like all get out but I love her so much I bare the pain.  Anyway another thing that happens is, when I turn my head I get the pain in my opposing side of my chest.. so if I turn my head to the right the left side of my chest hurts.  The pain is very similar to what you have discribed.  I never heard of costo till I got onto this forum.  I kept thinking I had a heart problem.. had all of the test.. not my heart.  Turned out to be costo.  I hate it!!  But at least I know I'm not dying from a heart attack.  One other thing.. I have anxiety attacks, I can almost gaurantee that I'll have a costo attack right about the same time.  The pain is extremely exhausting and can take days to pass.  Sorry for the bad news.

Hope that helps.

Happy Valentine's day!!

So the pain and tenderness I feel in my ribs and sternum and the shooting pains I get sometimes through my chest might be costo?? My heart has checked out, so I just assumed these pains were regular old boring fibro.

I don't have any advice to add here, Meg, but thanks for starting this thread! I learned something new, too :-)

Yes,  sometimes .. and as for the sighing thing.. I know I do it and I'm sure its really annoying to the ppl around me.  But sometimes its the only way I can get a good deep breath.  I know there's nothing wrong with my lungs, had them x-rayed last Oct.  (yes, I'm stupid enough to smoke shakehead . so I wanted to make sure it wasn't something more serious.. so it's not the smoking).. I've had this problem for years...(about 20 years to be exact).

Hope that answered your question.

More hugs...

Hi,

Oh yes a lot of sighing is a good way to put it. My ribs are one of my greatest sources of fibro pain. I like Marlee have that one spot that is sooooo tender. Now I do not have trouble breathing if that is what you meant, just notice the soreness when I breathe. It will last a few days and then go away. You know I never thought about it worsening with the anxiety fact but of course all fibro symptoms greatly worsen with anxiety. I personally believe anxiety is a precursor to the entire disorder.

Ok, now the breathing thing brings up another question. I get this weird sensation sometimes like I'm not getting enough breath even though I am able to breath deeply and don't feel like I'm not getting enough oxygen or anything. How can I describe it? It's like, when I take a deep breath, I can feel it fill up my lungs like normal, but my chest feels kind of tight and like it's not getting enough air. Does that make any sense at all?? It's so weird..I've thought mabye its a GERD thing, but maybe it's a costo thing?

Could be .. I'm not sure.. but I get the same thing.  Like my brain is starving for oxygen.. Yawning brings more oxygen to your brain.. so why wouldn't a deep breath?!!? I dunno?!?

Yes!! That is exactly how I feel. I have GERD as well so maybe that is it...maybe a combination of the 2?

When I wear a bra, it feels like someone is grabbing me around my rib cage - and I can't wait to get it off again! Is this one of the symptoms? I also find myself needing to sigh and/or take deep breaths to feel like I'm getting air in my lungs....

I have a question- are costochondritis and pericarditis the same thing? similar things? if not, are the treatments different?

Sorry Sera, I don't know anything about pericarditis. You might want to start a new thread with that question, maybe some of our more seasoned firbromites could answer it.
Warm hugs,

Hi Sera,

I believe costochondritis is the more commonly know fibro condition. i also believe percarditis is an inflammation of the chest wall and can even produce a fever. Yes, costo ends in itis denoting inflammation but I think a sed test will show low to no inflammation with the costo. I may be wrong but most things in fibro do not cause inflammation even though it sure feels like it.

Did you do any research on the vitamin and weight gain issue? Just curious as I found nothing to substantiate this. AND I believe as Sherrine stated we really need our supplements.

Hey Patsie and thank you for the info on costo, I have been reading and they seem somewhat similar but not the same. about the vitamin and weight gain issue, so far nothing points to supplements of this type causing weight gain. But I do have a few calls still out and have a bit more reading to do.
