Hey folks- its good to be here! I have been dealing with some kind of flu since last Tuesday, what ick! Anyway, I am looking for suggestions about which nutritional supplements I should be taking. The doc has suggested omega 3s and I am looking at them. I have been reading about acai and gogi. Any thoughts on supplements? Thanks!

Hi Sera,
I take malic acid and magnesium, CoQ10, D-Ribose, fish oil, acai, olive leaf extract, L-carnitine, calicum, vitamin C, B complex. There's probably more, can't think right now!!! I had read a book by Dr Teitelbaum, who has fibromyalgia and heads up the Fibro Centers. The book is called "From Fatigue to Fantastic". In it, he writes about how you can manage FM naturally. I've been doing this for over a year. Honestly, I haven't "cured" FM, but maybe I'd be worse off if I wasn't taking these? I just don't know. I'm almost afraid to stop them. I do have bad days, but I am able to exercise, which is better than some with FM. Anyway, there you have it. Good luck!

Hey Miriam! I am still looking into the fish oils and I know to look for those high in EPA and DHA. I am still concerned tho about what others have reported as a "smell"? Can I ask which brand and amount daily you take? Thanks!

Sera, I heard some good advice about fish oil supplements recently! A lot of people complain about "fish burps" after taking them (ick, doesn't sound pleasant) and I heard that if you take them before you eat, your food settles and mixes with the supplement; but if you take it after you eat, it sits on top of your food and is more likely to repeat. It makes sense when you think about it...don't know if that helps with the "smell" issue!

Oh and if you aren't already taking it, consider a Vitamin D supplement. Many people with FMS and other chronic pain disorders are low in Vitamin D. Blood work showed I was moderately low, and taking a supplement has help - a little - with the pain, I think. Every little bit counts though!

My multi vitamin has 400 IU of Vit D in it, even with that, should I take a supplement? Thank you everyone for your comments, they are really helpful!

AR is definitely right about this one! Just make sure you eat VERY shortly after you take the pill, though, because if you wait too long you might start to feel sick to your stomach (which is what happens to me)

I also take Magnesium, Malic Acid, Vitamin C, B-12, a B-complex, and Calcium. I've been taking this combo for about 4 months now, and although I can't say I feel all better, if I forget to take my vitamins, I definitely notice that I feel worse!

Sera
I have read that the brand of fish oil is important because some of them are fresher than others...who knows if this is true? I was buying from Costco, just the fish oil and both me and my husband were plagued with the "fish burps". I changed to a brand that I pay a little more for, I get all my supplement through iherb.com, their prices are really good and if you order enough, I order every two months so I get an order together, shipping is free. Anyway, this is not an ad for iherb, just wanted to share that information. The brand I have now of fish oil, which I purchase through iherb, is Carlson Super Omega 3 Fish Oil. They are soft gels, 1,000 mg. My cardiologist has me taking 3 of these a day which I split up. Fish oil is also very good for lowering cholesterol, not sure which one right now, HDL, LDL or triglycerides, or maybe all of them!
Hope thqat helps

Sera, I know I am taking the Vit D supplement on top of my multi, and I don't think you can OD on Vit D, but you could always call your doctor and ask? Or if you've had blood work done in the recent past you could ask to see if your Vit D was tested and what the level was.
