Has anyone else heard that drinking Diet Coke causes pain??  I have heard that the sweetener in it causes pain, especially in fibromyalgia.  I have tried to cut down on the intake of Diet Coke and increased my intake of water.  I have been so thirsty lately and in such a pain flare that I thought I would give it a try.

I would really like to know if any of you have done this and what your results were.  Please respond and let me know.  Thanks,

Hey Linda,

I am sorry to hear this.  I know I am crashing this party and I hope you don't mind.  I have heard this too.  What I have heard is that the artificial sweetners are very inflammatory to the body.  This is something we MSers try to avoid.  I do drink a diet coke now and again (once a month maybe?).  I have switched to water but to makes things sweeter I drink sweet tea.  I sweeten it with one of the natural sweeteners...I like stevia based sweeteners. The newest one is called truvia. I think this one is showing up in grocery stores.  It has low or zero glycemic index so not a big blood sugar issue.  Also sweetening with honey is a good choice.....it has less of a blood sugar reaction and it loaded with antioxidants.  It has taken me a while to adjust but it is happening.  I am happily drinking lots of tea.  My tea of choice is anything decaff, but I particularly like rooibos.

Good luck!!  I do think I feel better when NOT driking diet cokes......this could be the placebo effect but I believe in that too!!  I just re-read my post.............this sounds like a commercial for stevia products!  LOL

I was in high school when they first came out with aspartame.  My father warned me about it then.  He had heard that it could cause a lot of problems.  Of course I didn't listen and did drink a lot of diet sodas in my lifetime.  But now I drink water or tea.  Rarely, I'll have a glass of Fresca.  I have come to like water far better than anything else and nothing quenches my thirst like water, too.

I would just drink plenty of water and see what happens.  You could possibly be somewhat dehydrated, too.  Most of us don't drink the amount of water we should.  Let us know how it goes and if it lessens your pain.

Not only the artificial sweetner causes problems, but the stimulant in the caffiene can cause pain too. That is what my doctor told me. But I can live with the pain better than the fatigue.

I can't eat or drink anything with artificial sweeteners because it gives me awful headaches. Haven't noticed whether or not it makes the rest of my body hurt more, but I stay away from all of them because I can't stand having a headache!

Jones brand sodas do not have artificial sweeteners in them. They contain sugar which I fid is safer than the diet aids and high fructose corn syrup.

Hi all,
I used to drink a lot of soda. First sugar, then diet Coke or (better) Diet Pepsi with Lime. I have always had migraines, but notice in the past few months (about when I came into this 'flare') I could not drink diet sodas with aspartame or even Splenda (like Coke Zero), because I would get a migraine that was worse than migraines I used to have. I tested that by drinking only water and tea for a month and then had a diet Pepsi. It tased and felt fantastic, especially because I have dry mouth from the meds. But within an hour I had a headache that lasted 18 hours. I noticed I definitely need a lot more water since I started meds 3 weeks ago. Every once in awhile now I'll have a regular soda. And I never used to like drinking water! I guess it's my body's revenge for loading up on aspartame and chemicals for so many yeears- now I drink water and like it!

Hi there Lindalooloo!!

I do like Coke Zero or IBC Diet Rootbeer. But I'm really moving away from them. Hubby and I got a Britta Water Pitcher about 6 mons ago and now I drink a lot more water. I must agree with the others, I seem to feel better on days when I don't drink any soda. But sometime at night I'll have a diet rootbeer or Coke Zero... when I'm having cravings for something sweet. (Trust me.. I'd rather have an icecream sunday or cookies or cake.. but I'm avoiding sugar and it seems to be working.. I think I might have lost a pound or two)

Hugs and happieness...

We got a Britta Water Pitcher, too, and I LOVE it! It keeps our water nice and cold and clean tasting (the water here in our town tastes nasty straight out of the tap) and I'm finding it's helping me drink a lot more water, too. In fact, aside from the occasional cup of tea, water is pretty much all I drink anymore.

Point here-I do have one! lol-is that I would definitely recommend getting a Britta Pitcher! It really does a great job and ends up paying for itself when you consider the cost of bottled water.

Thank you for all your wonderful responses! I do take them all to heart. I do have headaches too, so maybe cutting down on the soda will help too.

I have a culligan water delivery system, so I have plenty of great tasting water to drink. I have a well, so drinking the water is out of the question for me.

Thanks again all!!

Well water is good usually. I have a well too and I love the taste of the water. Though we use the britta pictures too to cut back on the minerals that are in the water. Especially when it comes to making coffee and stuff. The lime and calcium build up and plug up our bunn coffee maker. But other than that, I love well water, much better than city.

I hope that you are feeling better since you have cut back on the diet coke.

Best wishes for a wonderful day
Hugs, Karen

One of my sisters has a well and I absolutely love the water from it. I give her containers and she fills them for me from the tap when she comes into town. Our city water- pah. You can smell the chlorine right from the tap. It makes a difference what kind of water you're drinking. I'd rather drink a diet Pepsi and get a headache than drink my city's water. And it's supposed to be one of the best!

Didn't mean to dis well water. I grew up with a well and well water and I often drank it. But the well I have now has awful water. It is loaded with minerals and is orange practically. It smells bad and I for one, cannot drink it.

For those of you that drink well water, I say wonderful.
