Hi all,
I haven't had pain like this in awhile. But recently, I've developed bilateral shoulder and neck pain. Its a weird pain. It doesn't affect my shoulder joints or range of motion. Its just a generalized pain when I move around. It goes up into my neck.
Its like a severe stiffness. It just doesn't make any sense to me. It never goes away, even if I haven't done much. (I guess nothing about FMS makes sense though, does it?)
Anyone else have this?
I have an elevated uric acid and have been reading a bit about how it can give variable symptoms.........like FMS symptoms, rather than the swollen toe symptom.
Anyone else have this shoulder problem?

Sometimes I have shoulder pain but mine is usually stabbing me on the outside of my shoulder. I have been going to a Chiropractor and everyother appointment he works on stretching out my neck and shoulders. I have been getting better even-though I have to pay my own way but it's not much. I use to get headaches all the time but now I only get very very mild ones and not very often. YEA!

Hi! I do get that pain. Mine will last for three or four weeks
and slowly fade. My husband can find knots but sometimes
rubbing those makes the pain go down my arms. Chiropractics
didn't help too much but he would stretch my shoulders and
neck and that gave some relief. I basically would just have to
wait it out. When it would keep me awake, I would rub IceyHot
on the areas. I don't think it took away the pain but it did give
me a new sensation to focus on. Sounds strange but it somehow
helps. The neck and shoulder pain are probably one of my most
aggrevating symptoms. Hang in there because it will pass.

Hi Cathy, good to hear from you. My shoulders has been a mess from the beginning of fibro and only get worse. A massage will loosen them up for a day or so but then the muscles get tight again. My shoulders, shoulder blades and neck have always been a problem and I don't have to strain them to cause pain. It doesn't make sleeping fun since I can only sleep on my sides. For me I think it is cause the muscles are so tight.

luv and hugs

Shoulder and neck pain are pretty constant for me, too.  I just try to stretch them as much as possible.  Try using moist heat on your shoulders.  It does feel mighty good.  A good massage helps me a lot too.

It's good seeing you again.  It's been ages!  Besides your shoulders, I hope everything is going well with you.

Cathy,
Not trying to be a worry wart here, but we have a member, Annie in Oz, who had some bad, ongoing shoulder pain that turned out to be a heart attack. She suffered a stroke during bypass surgery and has really had a tough go of it getting back to normal. So I'm gonna shout this....

PAIN IN THE NECK AND SHOULDERS CAN BE SYMPTOMS OF A HEART ATTACK IN WOMEN!!

Please put a call into your doctor's office and talk to him. Better to be safe than sorry.

I've just come through a three month period of shoulder/neck/upper arm pain, left side. Then I found myself in emerg with horrible chest pain. It turned out to be costochondiatis. It was as if the first three months were a build up to the finale, incredible chest pain caused by the muscles around the heart. The emerg doc gave me a skeletal muscle relaxer, careful, it'll floor you, which I usually only took at bedtime, otherwise I couldn't drive. On the rare days I needed it during the day, I would either get my son to drive, or stay home. I went to a massage therapist, once every two weeks for three sessions. I am sure that was what broke the cycle. There were knots at the top of my shoulders the size of walnuts, and twice as hard. She would work these for a bit, pressing down into the knots to try to soften them up a bit, and then go on to another area. Then come back and work them some more. Eventually my shoulders dropped down a bit, from up by my ears. Also, although life has been incredibly stressful, moving house and all, all sorts of hoops to jump through then all sorts of screwups, plus my son here with me. Definitely that situation will have to be temporary cause he causes me stress by being cranky all the time, unmotivated, and draing my resources. He is supposed to start school in a few weeks or so, keeping my fingers crossed, he gets funding. He is definitely a mixed blessing. He can be very helpful at times and very hurtful, other times. I really just want to deal with this dreaded disease, to the best of my ability, in peace. Today, I used up the last of my pain meds. I see the doc on Monday. Because of the Costo episode, I went through a few more than usual. So, out of pain meds, again. This means mother's day is going to be spent lathering ungents on myself, curled up with the heating pad. So it goes. Hope your shoulder irons itself out.

Thanks everyone,
I sleep on my sides too. Maybe that just flared it up?
It just seemed to come out of nowhere. But.....I have been consistently been drinking caffeine in the mornings, and I'm wondering if its somehow affecting me. I will try to give it up :(
I had my heart checked out not long ago and it was fine.
Like I mentioned, I do wonder about my elevated uric acid level. My doc says no, but I've been reading that it can cause muscle pain.
I'm lucky in that I haven't had this for alot of years. But like so many other FMS symptoms.........it showed up again without any apparent injury.
My problem is that I keep thinking that FMS should make sense........and it doesn't!
Any good suggestions for shoulder stretching exercises?

yup; get into your car, a truck is better and ever so slowly reach back with the left arm and put your seatbelt on. Take it off, put it on. about 50 repeats should get you started on the road to recovery. Oh yeah, a couple warm up exercises first; Clasp hands, arms straight, behind back. Bend as far forward as possible w.o pain (we Fibromites tear easily), now lean as far back as possible, w/o pain. 3 repeats. Now put feet hip width apart (careful here; we fibromites tear easily), hands on hips. Bend as far to right as possible w/o pain. Then to left. 3 repeats. Now you're all warmed up and ready for the more strenuous seat-belt ordeal. While you're at it you may as well drive to the art gallery, museum, wherever tickles ya, might take your mind off the sore shoulder. Good luck.

Thanks tyno!
I think when these pains start up, we instinctively try not to use the arm/leg/shoulder, etc. I will do those exercises.
You've reminded me that for a long time, I had an incredibly stiff neck and could barely turn my head to look around. I started just sitting straight, and turning my head as far as I could to the left, and holding it for 10 seconds, and the same on the right. I would do this several times a day. Within a week, I got rid of the neck stiffness! It was amazing that it helped so quickly!
So instead of babying my shoulder, I'll start those exercises you suggested. Thanks a bunch!

Well Cathy A; Thank-you. As long as you give the torn muscle adequate time to heal, like do exercises every second day (except seatbelt one,) do that everytime you get in the car. My son skipped it one day and got a $114.00 ticket. Now that'll take your mind off your arm.
