Have you been checked for asthma or GERD? I have both, and both can cause a dry, smoker's type cough. My asthma is usually worse at night, and my GERD is worse when lying down. Also, my allergist says that my GERD makes my asthma worse. It makes trying to sleep lots of fun.
Just FYI, I also don't have the typical wheezing with my asthma, just the cough and chest tightness, so you can have it even if you are just noticing a cough.
