sorry I haven't contributed much to this forum.  As I gain experience with this illness (if that's what I even have) I will certainly return the favor.

The pain I'm experiencing right now is overwhelming.  It radiates from the upper abdomen, right where it meets my chest.  I was grocery shopping when it got really bad.  It was when I got to the checkout.  I went to grab some tiny item from my cart to place on the conveyor belt, when the pain struck me like something I've never felt.  The pain had been mild for a couple of days before this.  Anyway, I struggled to maintain my composure as I started to grab one thing at a time out of my cart.  I thought I was going to have to grab someone and have them call an ambulance.  I hate to make a scene, so somehow I managed to get to my car.  Placing the groceries inside the car was absolutely horrible.  Even thought the pain was just below the chest, and not right on the chest, I was kind of worried I was having a heart attack.  I sat in my car, and breathed heavily.  It took me several tries to get my gearshift into reverse.  Everytime I moved the pain peirced me.

The question I have, is "have any of you had this pain before?"  I was not able to move, stand or sit without horrible pain.  I'm slightly better now.  I can't get in to see a rhuemy for 3 weeks.  All tests from nuero came back normal.  I ended up in the ER this time at 4am Sunday morning, and they did several tests as well.  All MRIs are clean.

One thing worth mentioning: hydrocodone is helping a great deal.  Does this drug help with anyone else's fibro pain?  I was under the impression that this drug was useless against fibro.  I think this pain my be due to muscle spasms.

Thanks gain for all your help.

Thanks, once again, for all of your support.

Hi Rob, that had to been scary, and it happening at a store-

I had a bad incident happen to me just last week- I had been weeding, and I overdid it because I wanted to get an area done in the garden and be done with it. I was relaxing on the couch that evening and went to adjust the throw from my couch over my feet. All of a sudden my left upper back and left shoulder started to freeze up. Then I got instant sharp stabbing pains under my heart and rib cage and could not sit up the pain was so bad- I actually could not move because of the stabbing pains below my heart and rib cage. I was thinking, you have got to be kidding me- this is nothing I felt before!! After about 20 min. I was able to get off the couch, take my Tylenol, get my heat wrap and get in on my left shoulder. Then another half hour before I think I could take a normal breath. I kept the heat on my left shoulder all evening and it got better.

I feel it was a muscle spasm from all the weeding and extra yard work I had done- WON'T do that again! Our muscles are just not the same anymore- sad

Do let the rheumy know what happened and let us know what he says-

Rob all doctors keep space for emergency appointments so if you don't think you can wait call and tell them you need to get in cause your in horrible pain. Is your sternum sore to the touch??? It sounds like it could be costochondristis. I ended up in the ER on Christmas Eve with horrible muscle spasms on the left side of my ribs from hurting a rib. It is unbelievable what a fibro body can do.

I hope you get better soon.

luv and hugs

Rob, it does sound like costochondritis to me, too.  I do have that but I haven't had the pain as bad as you described it.  Do see your doctor and be checked out.  I did that when I started getting heart palpitations and he ran me through a battery of tests and ruled out a heart problem.  So, now I know.

It's far too easy to blame these things all on fibromyalgia.  I know if that happened to me I would want a thorough check up.  It probably is fibro but it's better to be safe than sorry.

GamJill,
thanks so much for sharing.  Sorry you are having to go through all that pain.  I will definitely tell my Rhuemy about this latest episode and let everyone know what they say.  I hope you feel better real soon.

Marlee,
When I googled my symptoms, costochondristis did come up.  I was thinking that is probably what is going on.  However, my sternum isn't sore, and the pain isn't really on my chest, it's right below my chest.  And about the emergency appt thing, I could not believe what they said!  I called my regular doctor, and her nurse called several Rhuemy's, and none of them considered the fact that I couldn't move and could barely breathe an emergency.  I didn't understand that at all.  My doc called in a prescription for hydrocodone, and that is helping, plus I think I'm getting better.  Sorry you had to end up in the ER on Christmas Eve!  What a bummer.

I've always worked out 3-4 days a week, and that's what I really want to get back to.  I had just gotten to the point where I was working out again (just light workouts), when all this happened.  I jogged a mile 2-3 days before this happened, so maybe that's what set it off.  However, one week prior, I helped a friend move, which involved moving very heavy slate for a pool table.  I seemed fine with that.  Who knows :)

Thanks Sherrine. I was thinking I should have my heart checked as well. I keep a very clean diet, and am pretty young, but I know that doesn't mean it can't happen to me. After all, my grandfather had open heart surgery at age 49!

Rob, my husband died at 51 years old.  He was having chest pains, for two years, and the doctors ran a few minor tests and said it was stress.  They were wrong.

So, when I started having problems I saw my doctor right away.  He did an electrocardiogram, an echocardiogram, an ultrasound of my heart, and had me wear a monitor for 24 hours.  My heart was fine so now I don't worry when I have those symptoms.  It does give you peace of mind to be checked out, instead of guessing.

Hey! I have also had the same problem.
It would happen whenver i would be up shopping or walking aorund somewhere.
They found out it was due to my heart rate being up

I would have extreme pain. The worst time it happened was when i was taking a shower..and i had danced that night. I started hving that cramping pain. In my rips and right aorun where the sternum is. As son as i leaned backwards slightly to wash my hair the pain got so bad i coudl barely breathe. It was like it too the wind out of me. I couldn't even call for my boyfriend to come help me. i just sta down slowly in the shower untill it was bareable enough to move.

It is scary. They took some more blood samples to check everything again to make sure. I go back this comming week to get the results!

I hope the doctors can find something to help you!
we are here as well for comfort :)
