My malic/magnesium from Puritan's Pride came today.  I had been taking a malic capsule and separate magnesium tablet but thought one pill would be easier. Yikes, no one told me it was going to be a horse pill!  shocked How do you guys swallow it?  I'm the one who has trouble swallowing any pill but I know this one won't go down.  Do you think I can crush it?  I think I saw a pill crusher at Walmart.

These are specially coated for ease of swallowing.  They are only a shade larger than my calcium pill and I've never had a problem swallowing it.  I know I swallow pieces of meat that are much larger than the pill.

But, I suppose you could crush it.  I'm really not sure.  I wish I could be more help but, as I said, they go down easy for me.

I know they are coated but I guess it is all in my head.  Some days I can swallow my calcium and other days I have to chew it.
Thanks Sherrine.

I think my problem with swallowing pills started back in the 70's or 80's.  Some of the younger people won't remember this but I remember when Cher went to the ER because she had a big vitamin pill caught in her throat (at least that is what the tabloids said back then) tongue   The crazy things we remember!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been told that our throats are the size of our fists. A nurse told me that. Try and think of the size of food you swallow and maybe that will help.

I know what you mean, Puppylover.  I just don't think about the size or I remember that I swallow chunks of food that are larger so then I don't worry about it.  Our anxiety doesn't make it easier!

Have you tried eating something after you have taken the pill? I have to do this, otherwise I feel like the pill is stuck in my throat. Might what to ask the pharmacist if cutting that pill will change the effect a whole pill has.

Take care

Try taking the pill with yogurt or cool whip. This is what we did for my mother-in-law when her Parkinsons was messing up her swallowing. Worked like a charm! Ice cream would work, too! Yum! Another reason to eat ice cream.....

Thanks everyone.  I'm going to try to take one tomorrow.  Jeannie, I do use yogurt or applesauce to take my vitamins everyday.  I did this for my mom when her Parkinson's interfered with her swallowing.  Maybe this has something to do with my swallowing problem.  I remember how bad it was when mom choked on stuff. confused

I have the same problem with that dang pill. Most of the time I have to cut it in half and then swallow with yogurt. If it sticks I have a small glass of milk or water handy.

Thanks Littleneck, that's what I think I'm going to try this morning.

Did you swallow the pill this morning?  You will find it easier if you don't think about it.  You probably do have some fears because of your mother but you don't have Parkinsons so try not to think that way.

I can relate. For some reason, I've always had a fear of choking. Don't think I ever did choke, or I'd remember that. I have a difficult time with large pills too. I just keep a large bottle of water in my hand and drink like crazy. I also cut my glucosamine chondroitin pill in half. The others I am able to manage. I seem to get them caught, at times, somewhere in the back of my throat. It's like there is a shelf there...anyone else have this? I don't choke on it, just can't get it to go all the way down.

Miriam, I have that too and you described it perfectly!  I keep sour dough pretzel nuggets in the house and will eat one of those and it shoves anything down that way.

This is exactly what it's like-great description!! I also get this feeling with food sometimes (especially "rough" foods)..does anyone else get that??

Thank you everyone.  I split the darn thing and swallowed it with applesauce.  Now I just have to do this several times a day-three isn't it?  I tried not to think about it and it worked. Hip hip hooray! :-)

Start out slowly.  Magnesium can cause diarrhea.  See how this one pill is.  If you are fine then take two pills and wait to see how that affects you.  It might take you a week or two to get up to three a day.

Ok.  I'll see how I do with just one and increase slowly.  Thanks again.

Hi Puppylover,

I also can't take big pills. I bought some vitamins once because they were a great deal. Then I opened the bottle and whoa!!! I tried cutting the tablet into 3 and taking in 3 pieces, but that was not enjoyable. I hope you can find a way to use what you've bought, but maybe the capsules would be an easier solution for the future.

The Better Health store sells malic acid in 800 mg. capsules. The brand name is Nature's Way. You can order online from the Better Health store. They are in Michigan, and maybe elsewhere, and they ship to U.S. and Canada, and maybe beyond, not sure. These malic acid caps. don't have magnesium, but you could just buy your own calcium/magnesium supplement separately and take at the same time you take the malic acid. There are probably other brands out there too that come in capsule form or smaller pills than the Puritan's Pride.

all the best, manyembers

Swallowing large pills or vitamins can be uncomfortable. They certainly don't feel as comfortable as a large piece of meat, malleable soft and warm.
And why companies continue to manufacture large size (opinions differ on what lg.is)monster pills baffles me. I'd opt to take four small round ones versus one oblong "horse" pill. But that's just me. I like the idea of following the pill w/ applesauce. The Pharmacist is a great resource for
best time of day, best brands and if it's okay to crush. Did you know not all vitamins are created equal? The higher quality ones have less additives and fillers. And the quality of those fillers matter, to aid in the highest absorption and asimiliation. Cheap vitamins may only provide your body w/ a fraction of what the label boasts. The fillers bind up much of the the active parts and then you excrete it. "Food" for thought!!

Thanks again to all.  I've decided to split the pill into thirds and take with applesauce.  So far this has worked.  One pill did not have any negative effect on me so today I've taken one in the morning and one-half in the afternoon.  I'm going to try this for a few days and see how it works.

Always move the pill around in your mouth to coat it with saliva before you swallow it. The saliva helps it go down. I sometimes swallow up to three of the Puritan's tablets at once and haven't had a problem.

I haven't taken the malic acid in about a week because I had surgery and I can feel the difference. I'm starting back up today. I think I'll try 4/day until I can work out again, then I'll go back up to 6/day.
