I read that term mentioned here a lot, and I've never understood what it meant (don't know if I have it or not smilewinkgrin ), so I thought I'd ask.

It's like when you run into the coffee table for the tenth time in one day and break your shin bone???  LOL.  I don't really know either and have wondered about what it is too.

i dont know what others consider break thru pain, but to me it is when you are on meds for the fibro..[ be it lyrica, cymbalta, pain meds etc.] and you still have pain that occurs......pain breaks thru anyhow. example.....i take cymbalta & lyrica for my fibro but my pain still occurs at times and i have to take my percocet for the pain. man, this is really hard to explain!! i dont think the term is a good one because we all have pain anyhow!!! i have "break thru pain" even when i take my percocet. in other words... the percocet is for the pain but the pain will still occur at times or will "break thru". hope this doesnt sound too idiotic...........we'll blame it on the fibro fog!!!
good wishes

Pad the edge of your coffee table Donna and you won't get break through pain, duh. smilewinkgrin

Since the only thing I take for pain is tylenol I guess I don't really get it either. My pain is either slight, medium or OMG. For those on narcotics etc., is your pain completely gone and then when it comes back that is break through pain???

pretty much what was said before, if your currently taking pain medication and have a treatment plan, this is when the pain still rears its ugly head and you hurt so bad you need additional medication.

If you take your meds, the pain can stay at a low ebb and is mostly manageable if you pace yourself and rest and etc etc.  Breakthrough pain is when it gets really bad despite your best efforts.  Worse than usual - like a flare.

Ok.  That makes sense.  Like Marlee, I can't take meds, so my pain just constantly goes up and down with no rhyme or reason, except when I've really over done it.  Then my pain will get really bad, but I know what caused it.  Most of the time, though, it completely has a mind of it own (the pain, that is rolleyes ).

Today, it is in the OMG category, partially due to my sacroiliitis.   It's bad enough that we fibromites have to deal with all of the fibro pain, but many of us also get to have fun with arthritis, sacroiliitis, costochondritis, migraines, insert your other pain condition(s) here__________, etc.  mad

Hope everyone's pain is manageable today.  I'm hopeful that mine will be better tomorrow.  :-)

"Breakthrough" pain is when terminal patients have moderate pain in between their regularly scheduled pain medicine times.
So then, they need to have a dose of a different pain med. in between, to tide them over.
