I just made an appointment with my rheumatologist, because this is scaring me, but in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone else has had this.

I recently took a visiting friend to Disneyland, and it not only swelled up, but there was a red, rash-looking outbreak on the front of my ankle.  It wasn't a rash, because there was nothing raised on the skin.  I suspected broken blood vessels, but there was no bruising or bruse-type healing in appearance.

No more outbreaks, but for the last week or so my left foot and ankle have been swollen on a daily basis, with tingling up and down the leg, with a slight soreness on the outer side of the knee.  There is a slight pinkish discoloration on the top of the foot, and the ankle gets about one-third larger around than the right ankle.

I suspect it has something to do my fibro, although I do have severe sciatica, but I watch my sodium intake religiously.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?  Thanks, in advance!

Hi, Snootzie!  Okay.  This is what happened to me the past two summers.  The summer of 2007 the pad under my big toe on one foot felt swollen and it was difficult to put weight on it.  This went on for several months and then disappeared by Christmas.

Last summer, 2008, the third toe on my other foot swelled and so did the top half of my foot.  Again, it was painful and the swelling did make my skin look darker.  (My foot looked like I walked barefoot on a dusty road for weeks and never washed my feet.  LOL  I looked especially nice in barefoot sandals!  LOL))  My doctor said that was caused from the swelling.  He thought it was gout but I don't think so because with gout, if left untreated, it does subside in a few weeks.  This, again, went on for months and then cleared up in January.

So far this summer, I've been fine.  I personally think it is fibro doing this.  I have a cousin with fibro and she said she had problems with pain in her feet in the summer too.  So, this is probably another mystery of fibro that won't be solved!

It isn't unusual for feet to swell in the summer.  I'm sure you know that but when you factor fibro in, that could make the difference.  Hope this helps you.

Maybe you have a case of cellulitis? If so that needs to be checked out soon since antibiotics are in order. Cellulitis can become a serious problem so isn't something to just blow off or assume it is fibro related. Hope you get an answer very soon. Take care. Lisa

Thank you both, Sherrine and geckogirl.  You know, cellulitis never even crossed my mind.  I do have varicose veins, which is something to consider.

I can't wait to see what the doctor says on Monday!  Thanks again, ladies. :-)
