Well...I have written about my obsessive neighbors before but now I am ready to get out the pepper spray.  It has been a very cool and rainy summer here...have only had to have the AC on about three times.  These people get up and mow their lawn somewhere between 7 and 8 in the morning every other day...weed eaters, hedge trimmers...their lawn is about 1/4" tall. He mows in the rain...wind...doesn't matter.   My windows are open and I am jolted awake by all this equipment at the crack of dawn about four times a week.  Then...she goes in the house and runs her central vac and the unit is outside so I hear the roaring of that for about an hour.  Now mind you, I have lost 60% of my hearing due to Meniere's disease so that gives some indication on how loud it is.  I even tried ear plugs and my Monster Tractor Store Noise Blocking Head phones but they are too uncomfortable to sleep with.  Today, he is on a ladder cleaning his shutters with a tooth brush.  I swear I can hear the grit grinding.

Because my pain is worse at night, it's usually about two or three o'clock before I fall asleep.

Maybe one of you could go to their house and tell them you are from the Department of Noise Pollution Control and there is a federal law stating no lawn mowing before ten o'clock in the morning.  There's a nice bing fat pan of brownies in it for you...or a case of Molson's...your choice.  Oh, and make sure you throw down a tarp before you pull into his driveway.  He doesn't like  tire tacks on the black top and goes at those with a power washer about once a week.

Donna, I believe that you are not allowed to make a lot of noise like that until 8 AM.  That is the law around here.  We have a lot of lawn service people and they are not allowed to start until 8 AM.  You just might check into that and perhaps the police can give them a friendly reminder of the law.

I agree with Sherrine I am sure there is some kind of noise ordinance that you can get these folks on. I would definetly check on that.

You know Donna I have read many of your posts on these lunatic neighbors. Imagine cleaning with a toothbrush, have you ever????

Well they are the just the most uncaring, rude people in the world. Come on they have to know they are disturbing you at that hour. Soooo if they can be that way you should have no problem reporting them. I think Sherrine is absolutely right about an ordinance on early morning disturbances. Hey, you should set up loud speakers on their side of the house at night when they are trying to sleep. I mean I am patient and pretty understanding but really now this is too much.

We have enough to deal with without inconsiderate totally absorbed people like this.

Well I got that off my chest.

Patsie! I was just thinking about you the other day and wondering how you were doing. I hope things are going ok for you-great to see your name here again! :-)

Donna-I agree that there should be noise ordinances in your area-they are different for every town, I think, but here it is 8am also. That's just super inconsiderate of them to be making so much noise that early in the morning!

They also do sound super obsessive about their house/lawn/roof/gutters/sidewalk/everything....They would faint if they came and took a look at MY house and lawn..haha.

Also-this might be a dumb question, but have you ever spoke to them about your sleep issues and asked them directly if they could hold off a bit in the a.m.?

Can you send him my way - my gutters need to be cleaned and I have a toothpick he can use for the job! That should keep him out of your hair for a few days. :)

Seriously though, have you tried to say anything to them? Could he let you know what day he is going to mow so you can close your windows that night and use the a/c?

Hope you can get some quiet mornings soon.

The ordinances only pertain to someone living in town. Or that's how it is in MO. If you live out of town like I do...in the country...they can do nothing for you :(

The hubby won't let me say anything to them. (he can sleep through anything).  He is the only person on the block that these obnoxious people will speak to.  The man built most of the houses in our neighborhood including ours and the hubby likes to have access to free consulting whenever anything goes wrong...plumbing etc.  They have a judge on one side of them and a cop on the other...you would think the cop would say something to them.  Hubby is kinder than I am.  They are in their late 70's with nothing else to do and just says they like to keep busy so just leave them alone.  BTW...they have black topped their driveway THREE times this summer, with the steam rollers  and other equipment blasting away early in the morning.

I can hardly wait for winter...he literally snow blows his driveway about three or four times a day.  At least my windows are closed.

Just a funny note...there is a huge tall hedge that separates their house from the judges.  It is right on the property line.  OCD man trims his half and the judge lets his side grow about two feet taller and never trims it...it's all scraggly.  OCD man and his wife cannot stand it and sometimes just sit and chairs and stare at it thinking he will get the hint!

Oh...I am not making fun of OCD.  I am the one who counts the clothes when they come out of the dryer!

I shall survive!

Ask your hubby to invite the neighbors to dinner or lunch one weekend. It seems he is on good footing with them. Then get a couple of pizzas or order in, or cook if you're up to it, and let them know that as you are ill, you value your sleep more than anything. If they persist after it comes up in conversation like that, they are just boors and might need another illustration of your sleep habits - such as staying up "late" doing nice clattery chores outside your own house. They are probably very set in their ways.

When my dad retired he was so bored he was doing things like power wash the tire marks on the drive. My Mom made him go back to work for another 6-7 years!

Quiet time here ends at 6 am. I live in an apartment and we've had people stomping on the roof above our bed cleaning gutters at 6:30 am. The landscapers are at it with the mowers and weedwackers by 7:00 am. Even worse, they sometimes work on Saturday!

Our bathroom was being retiled and the tile guy was knocking on the door at 6:20 am wanting to come in and get to work.

I am NOT a morning person.

I have new neighbors that just moved in about three days ago. I gave them the benifit of the dought. OMG! The first day they moved in they had the TV roaring like a jet airplane between 2pm-11pm. I knocked on their door lightly as to not disturb my other neighbors and these 2 black guys couldn't even hear me. I'm thinking....What should I do now? They just moved in....hmmmm  Da^! it...... So I went back at 11pm and knocked louder on the door. They finally turned the TV down to answer the door. We have a 10pm quiet time around here. OMG I can not wait to move to a quieter place. I refuse to move into a large appartment complex again and I also refuse to have noisey loud neighbors again.

I got rid of the first noisey neighbors when I moved in here and I will get rid of another set of noisey neighbors.  The manager and leasing agents are not friendly at all and the manager is a B----- word. Can you tell I don't like them?...... devil

Just venting

Now there's an idea, Littleneck.  These people go to bed at 8:00 so maybe I'll wait until they are sound asleep and put a big ole boom box at the end of my driveway and play Muskrat Love at full volume for about an hour.  Or since it's still light out at that hour, get out the chain saw and trim the limbs off the fir trees that line our property.  Yup!

I should be kinder to these folk but they reported three people on our block for using black trash bags.  We are supposed to use clear ones but sometimes the garbage men pick up the black ones anyway...so why should THEY care???

Oh well...

Vest,

I dont have much advise to give, but THANK YOU so much for writing this. Knowing your neighbors do these crazy cleaning things very often makes me feel sooo much better about my father who is a crazy cleaning freak too. But luckly he works weekdays or he too would be out there mowing the grass every other day too. and my grandfather, who is my father's father is crazy about doing outside work too at like 6am, and at both of their houses, if you even dare move smething out of place, I get yelled at like I just set the house on the fire. It seems like every weekend when my dad is off of work, he's always doing something to the hose, always redoing the inside and/or the outside. He will make something then not like it and take it down then rebuild something else. Well anyways, I love my dad and grandfather but they need to stop doing these weird things nonstop, I can understand taking on a project every now and then but not every other day. Actually I was teasing my dad a few weeks ago and he made the remark on how he wanted me to measure every piece of grass with a ruler and trim them to the right legnth with a pair of scissors.

-carmen

PS, this tread kinda reminds me of a movie I just saw called "Lakeview Terrace", which is a very good movie, atleast I thought so lol. (except for the killings of course, atleast I hope none of you are shooting any shooting any of your neighbors lol)

I live in a basement apartment w. two small children upstairs. I have two dogs. So it's tit for tat. I try to keep my dogs quiet, I have an anti-bark collar for the little dog (all 60 pounds of him) and the big girl only makes noise when a stranger comes around. So, since I raised my teenage boys to Manhood, and always had a house full of their friends I learned how to cope. Lots of white noise generators. A fan and an air cleaner going in my bedroom. An exhaust fan in the bathroom, and if we are having a bad day, I turn the dehumidifier on as well. So, I learned how to sleep with a fan going next to me, and it is wonderful. I also, at one point, had a white noise generator. A "sound machine" which you could set to running water (not so good for us with bladder issues), ocean waves, better, and a thunderstorm, my all time favorite. Also, a rolled up towel under your bedroom door will also help. While traveling, I use the little silicone breast implants, no, whoops, the little silicone earplugs. They don't bother me like the foam ones which sound like nitro-glycerin going off inside your head while they expand. Hope something here works. All the best.

Fans only do so much. They really don't do anything for the low loud jet airplane sounds from my neighbors TV. I really don't know how they cope with not really being able to hear well. My son has tried the earplugs. NOT!

I have two fans in my room that I turn on at night. I have to get another fan for my son but that probably won't happen until next year when they come around again. I told him he could have the one in the livingroom but he won't take it for some reason.
