Hi, Everyone -- I'm new here, but looking for a good fibro forum!
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia back in 1996, after a number of years of pain and fatigue --- by a rheumatologist doctor. I had never heard of fibromyalgia when he diagnosed me, and I was surprised to find that the spots he pressed (the tender point check) were extremely tender and sore to the touch.
Anyway -- I am now 51, and just returned to my classroom after the summer, where I teach high school English. I only had the kiddos for two days this week, and I should add that I LOVE the kids!! Always have, and this is year 28 for me in the classroom!  ")  Anyway -- They started back to classes on Thursday, and then all day Friday I had a headache and my arch-enemy FATIGUE started setting in!
I dread fatigue --- it is my worst enemy, as I teach with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and I hate feeling drained, fatigued, and like I just have to sit down awhile! Classes are 90 minutes long, and it is go-go-go most of the time.
All day today, Saturday, I have tried to rest up some, and take it easier, with my sweet husband helping with usual weekend chores and laundry and such.
My doctor has suggested trying Lyrica, but after reading about the side effects, I'm not so sure. I had had pretty good success with Cymbalta, but it made me more depressed, I felt! I immediately started feeling better without it -- I am on Effexor for depression/ and also some menopause help. Right now I have Tylenol 4 for pain, and that does not help much most days, even at the higher doseage I am on now.
Do any of you take Lyrica?? What has been your experience?? What else works for pain? A few years ago I was on Vicodin for the pain, and it did work, but over three years of it it didn't work much unless I took a lot --- and it was hard to get OFF of it when I decided I just had to! Very addictive. So now I am in pain often and get headaches, back and neck pains every day.... shakehead
What helps other fibro sufferrers??  I'd love your advice and suggestions. I do try to pace myself and sit at my podium when necessary --- oh, and I am not overweight  -- I am a Weight Watchers lifetime member and keep my weight steady and trim. Still, the pain deters me from my workouts many days! rolleyes
Thanks, new friends. I am eager to hear from you!

Welcome to The Healing Well Forum. There is some very useful information in the top two threads. It sounds to me, that you're doing everything right, except perhaps, pacing oneself. For example: when I have a fairly intense or large job to do, I often have to break it down into smaller parts. If I am housecleaning, I will do a room, then rest a bit, then another room, and so on. This is difficult for 'go getters', but so important to ward off flares. I don't stand when I can sit, I don't walk across a room to get something when there's someone who can pass it, and I try to squeeze a little recuperation into the day. During my lunch hour, for example, I find a place to zone out for half an hour, even if it's my vehicle. Set an alarm though.
As far as meds go, it's a double edged sword. I need them to keep the pain at bay now, I take a mild codeine and acetaminophen compound. However, this can cause fatigue, so I try to keep it to a minimum during a busy day. Then in the evening I can take my medicine w/o it affecting my performance. There are many different med solutions here, some go the Natural route, and more power to them, but I need my medicine, for pain. I have to go now, but you'll be hearing from lots more folks, so, Good Night and Good Luck.

Morning Teaching,
I've been on a serious run of drugs over the last 30 years for arthritis and fibro. Some of them give you
"dry mouth" which they don't tell you can lead to peridontal disease or sjournes disease. I didn't know until
my teeth started rotting and my gums receeding. I'm slowly getting them corrected with Co Q-10.
The side effects of these meds are so severe that I've finally kicked all but the flexoril and darvacet. With my
herbal regieme I've only had 1 major flare in the last 5 weeks which lasted a day. During the first couple of months I used both the flex and darvs until the herbs healed a lot of the damage and then weened off of them. I found them
when I talked to a bodybuilder at the herbal shop I go to. I figured that I was in so much pain and dragged out
from lack of sleep, what did I have to lose? Thank God I found them. I'm walking without gimping, mowing my
grass for 3 hours at a time with a push mower, and doing a 8 - 12 hour work day without dragging.
Hope you can find one that works for you.

Thank you for your responses!
I am thinking I must try something else new, but really hate to. My episodes are lasting longer and hitting me much more often, however, since menopause. I have felt terrible all weekend, and have to work tomorrow.

I wonder if any of you have considered disability???

Oh, and what is the herbal remedy that is working so well for you?? I would be interested.

Thanks, all.
