I am 42 years old and have recently started getting these headaches across the back of my head. There is actually minor swelling where the back of my head feels kind of rippled. They are not sharp pains, more like an ache. It only last for about 5 minutes and then goes away. It takes about 15 minutes or so for the swelling to go down. They started out once every few days but now are daily, two or more times a day. Does that sound like stress or muscle spasms?

Hi, Cidsmom, and welcome!  It could be muscle spasms.  People with fibro do seem to have a lot of neck pain.  I try to massage my neck and scalp when I think of it.  Sometimes I can be pretty sensitive in that area.  I find that taking a hot shower and letting it spray my neck feels soooo good!

You can get a Bed Buddy at Walgreen's or other places or you can make one.  Take a tube sock, fill it 2/3's full of long grain rice (not instant) and tie a knot at the end.  Then pop it in the microwave and it will give off moist heat due to the moisture in the rice.  You can drape that around your neck and that might help you feel better.

Be sure to check out the Fibro 101 thread...the first thread on the forum.  There are links to good information about fibromyalgia and you will learn a lot.  You just might see yourself there, too.

I'm so glad you found us and joined in!  Read back posts and don't hesitate to ask more questions.  We are here to help you.  I hope to hear more from you soon.

I get a lot of muscle pain in my shoulders, neck, and head. I use Salon-Pas patches on my neck and find they really help. They are menthol patches that you can wear for hours. They are similar to BenGay and IcyHot but they last longer.

You can find them in the stores but I usually only see the large, expensive ones. Costco (our local warehouse store) sells a box with a lot of small patches for less than $7.00.

One minor problem is that your hair may get stuck to the edges and pull a bit when you remove them.

I swear by them and use them on whatever part of my body is in spasm or aching. Unfortunately, you can't cover yourself with them.

Whenever we go to the movies, the first thing my husband and I do is stick some patches on our upper back and/or neck. It makes the movie experience more comfortable.
