These are things your doctor will usually rule out before a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is given.  That's why there are so many test to go through.

 

FIBROMYALGIA :

 

“WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?”

Differential Diagnosis:  Definition from MedicinePlus:

“The process of weighing the probability of one disease versus that of other diseases possibly accounting for a patient’s illness...”

Myalgias: “muscle pain”

Arthralgias:  “joint pain”

 

The Mayo Clinic lists “Diseases and conditions similar to Fibromyalgia”:

Ankylosing spondylitis

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Cushing’s syndrome

Depression

Hyperparathyroidism

Hypothyroidism

Lupus

Multiple Sclerosis

Osteoarthritis

Peripheral neuropathy

Polymyalgia rheumatica

Restless Legs Syndrome

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Sleep Apnea

Sjorgren’s syndrome

 

The American College of Rheumatology lists the following Differential Diagnosis:

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Lyme Disease

Muscle Diseases (eg- Myofacial Pain Syndrome)

Hypothryoidism

Bacterial and Viral Infections

 

An article in The New York Times states: “The following conditions have been associated with fibromyalgia or mimic its symptoms:”

·                        Hypothyroidism

·                        Cervical and low-back degenerative disease

·                        Lyme disease

·                        Chronic fatigue syndrome

·                        Sleep disorders

·                        Depression

·                        HIV infection
