I don't feel fully recovered from my latest UTI....I still have that achey feeling, but thankfully the urges and awful pain is gone. My doctor had put me on 800 mg Bactrim twice a day for 3 days, which I finished yesterday.

Has anyone tried D-Mannose or those cranberry pills? I'm doing everything right--drinking lots of water, etc.

Thanks to anyone who has some advice!

HI Yankee Girl, I'm also a yankee girl - more the place, not the team :)

I also just finished up a terrible 2-week UTI, also the bactrim 2x day with the stuff that turns the urine orange but makes you feel better! It lasted and lasted, I was drinking tons of water and cranberry juice and it was just hanging on. My skin is so irritated "down there" and it seems like I am getting more and more UTIs that get worse and worse. I had to use witch hazel on a cotton pad, on the irritated skin. What finally made this one go away is that I started eating dried cranberries, like Craisins but without the sugar, from the natural foods bin. I ate a couple handfuls a day, and then also drank cranberry Emergen-C. I just finally kicked it. I am getting pretty tired of the UTIs so I think I'm going to make myself a snack break of dried cranberries and almonds or something like that, every day.

I haven't tried D-mannose; have you? My herbalist sister (who also has fibro) highly recommends herbal tea made from raspberry leaf. You might be able to find in your natural foods section.

Littleneck, thanks so much for your reply! (BTW, I'm also a "yankee girl" from the place---I'm a Red Sox person!)

Anyway, your response makes me feel so much better--I'll try the craisins and juice .

I haven't tried D-mannose. I found out about it on a UTI info site. I'm going to try it.

I never thought of using witch hazel "down there". Thanks for that tip also.

so glad that you're finally feeling better! UTI's are just so miserable.

Lots of times these medications last longer.  I have taken antibiotics for three days but it protects me for up to two weeks.  I'm not sure if this is one of them.

I am diabetic and if I have too much sugar in my system, I will get a UTI.  I haven't had one in several years now, thank goodness.  According to the Mayo Clinic, the following things can irritate your bladder.  I'm not sure if they can cause the UTI but this might help until you are totally cleared up.

  • Bladder irritation. Carbonated drinks, tea and coffee — with or without caffeine — artificial sweeteners, corn syrup, and foods and beverages that are high in spice, sugar and acid, such as citrus and tomatoes, can aggravate your bladder.
  • Of course, keep yourself hydrated after you are fine.  Hope this helps a little.

It does help, thank you. I have been trying to keep a record of what I eat and when I eat it, to help me lose weight (-12!), and noted that I had been eating and drinking a lot of sugar prior to getting this last UTI. I do drink a lot of black tea every day (at least 3 cups) but I also drink a lot of water, so I guess they balance each other out.

Littleneck, I drink 3-4 cups of tea a day, too, along with lots of water and haven't had the UTI's.  But too much sugar will do me in.

I used to put so much sugar in my tea and now at the ripe old age of 41 I have finally started to drink it unsweetened "like a grown-up," as my Grandma used to say!

Also, for irritation "down there" my gyno recommended Vitamin A&D ointment. My skin is very thin now that I'm through menopause and he said to use it every day.
