Hi guys, have recently been hospitalised for what was thought to be biliary colic- stones in my bile duct (gallbladder removed 2002) and the pain was excruciating. After a bunch of invasive tests, it turns out I do not have stones or sludge in the bile duct, but rather my liver was failing. They must have been concerned as I was on 15min obs. Apparently my liver was 'toxic' in the words of one of the doctors and in turn it gave me pancreatitis. The whole ordeal has been painful and tiring.

I went to my specialist yesterday who told me my liver function was really bad and that its still not improving. I am 29 and I am a tee-totaller. I do not drink at all. I asked him if all my pain meds and years of anti-depressants could have stuffed my liver- this is when it got interesting. He told me that people who are immuno suppressed can develop cirrhosis of the liver without being a drinker etc. He said the Fibro and my poorly behaved liver are mucking up together. He has referred me to a heptologist (liver specialist) for biopsy and more bloods. I also have post-cholycystecomy syndrome where the bile duct twists and gets blocked and mimics the pain I used to get when I still had a gall bladder.

Has anyone else here ever had this type of problem? They checked me for all of the hepatitis's which were negative, my bile duct still spasms causing tremendous pain and I feel like crap cos my latest scans also show that abnormally large lymph nodes are fighting off a massive infection. Separate from the fibro, i feel like ive been repeatedly kicked in the guts, abdomen swollen, and Im very lethargic, dizzy, hanging by a thread.

Any advice would be super- thanks fibro friends,

Mazfire, fibromyalgia is not an auto immune problem.  I'm not sure what your doctor is talking about.  You might be having a reaction to a medication  you are taking.  All our meds run through the liver.  Also, viruses can cause liver problems.  Here is a good site to get accurate information.

I'm diabetic and I was put on a medication for that that caused my kidney function to go downhill.  They took me off the medication and my kidney function went back to normal.  I'm not sure if the liver does that but you might want to ask that and they might want to double check what medication you are taking and the possiblity of them causing a problem.

Because I take ibuprofen and Tylenol so much to control my pain, my doctor does a liver panel on me twice a year.  I'm 62 and have taken a lot of medication in my lifetime with Crohn's and all and I've had fibro for 22 of those years and my liver is fine.

I've never heard of this before.  Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.   It has to be frightening.  I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this but I'll pray there is a simple solution.

Hi Mazfire, The first thing I thought of was Acetaminophen(Tylenol) and it is also an ingrediant
in Excederin can raise your liver enzymes. I took both of these meds and never took more
than I should and ended up with high enzyme counts. I had to have a Hep pannel run and it
came back negative. My counts went back to normal. I too had my gallbladder taken out.
Wondering if our livers are more sensitive because of it. Sorry about the pain you are feeling.
You said the pain mimics the the bad gallbladder, I know that pain is horrible and intense.

I rarely use Acetaminophen anymore because I am now on a immunosuppressant for MCTD.
Every 6-8 weeks I go and have bloodwork done. They keep an eye on my liver enzymes
and they are elevated at times but eventually go back in the normal range.

Hoping you get relief soon, Sending gentle hugs, and prayers

Thanks Sherrine for your response, the link was helpful- I dont know what my doctor is talking bout either, to be honest!

Sorry i used the wrong term- I didnt say auto immune, I meant illnesses where people have poor immune systems, and I my immune system is somewhat impaired and has been since I was 14. Sorry I got the terminology wrong.

Thanks-

It is!!! It is exactly the same as a gall bladder attack, the severity is like contractions under your rib cage! Oh I feel awful. Thanks so much for your well wishes and response-

Gosh Maz... You really are having a time of it. I know that the liver is the only organ in the body that has regenerating powers so I'm gonna ask the Good Lord to help you in that direction. I'm so very sorry that you are going thru this but I'm sending prayers. That's all I can do.

I'm so sorry you have been so sick Maz. I've had my gallbladder removed and I take the max of tylenol a day and have for years and my liver enzymes always come back okay, I get them checked about every six months.

about 15 yrs ago our little neighbor boy, he was about 2 at the time, got into something at the babysitters and they never did find out what he may have taken but he went into liver failure. He turned green, even the whites of his eyes were green. He was very close to having to have a transplant but as Jeannie said the liver does repair it's self.

I hope they find out what is causing your problems and get it fixed.

luv and hugs

I've recently had the same problem. I had my gall bladder removed in May and they found cerrhosis of the liver at that time.

Drinking has not been a problem for me. They did all the tests and it seems my problem was due to a fatty liver. I'm much older than you are though, and for me I can understand it. It's taken time for my liver to get so damaged, but at your age it seems impossible.

In our family, not all of us related by blood, we have had four gall bladder removals due to stones. My brother and I both have just a portion of our livers left in use.

It's important for them to find out just what the cause is of your liver damage, so you can stop the regression.

You're in my thoughts.

Hi Maz,

I understand what you're going through....I had a bout of severe liver problems in 2004 and they didn't know what caused it; it got better when I stopped taking an over-the-counter herbal supplement. My doctor said at the time that many herbs can cause liver damage.

But then in 2008 my blood work showed very high levels of liver enzymes again....and I wasn't taking any herbs at the time! So I had a liver biopsy and this time my hepatologist diagnosed me with autoimmune hepatitis, which means that my immune system is creating antibodies that are attacking my liver.

Fibromyalgia may or may not be autoimmune (there's controversy about it since certain antibodies have been found in some people with fibro), but it does seem to be associated with autoimmune diseases. My doctor always told me that my immune system was impaired too, but it definitely works well enough to try to kill me! :(

A hepatologist can diagnose your problem, usually with a liver biopsy and blood work. There are many possible problems that don't involve viruses, including fatty liver (mentioned by previous poster), autoimmune hepatitis, hemochromatosis, etc.

I do hope that you have your answer soon, and that you begin to feel better! You're in my thoughts and prayers...
