I am new to the chat, and probably haven't taken enough time to look at the other posts, but I am wondering if many of you have rib pain.  I have had pain since I was a kid, was diagnosed with fibro maybe 10 years ago. about 4 years ago I started having rib pain and it is getting unbearable. It feels like something is pushing out from behind the ribs and is slightly better if I stand or put pressure on it. Is this common? Has anyone found help with the pain?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi MWM,

And welcome to the fibromyalgia forum. What you are describing sounds a lot like costocondritis (sp). Which is common with fibromyalgia. There are others on the forum who suffer with this.

If you get a chance, check out fibro101. It is the first thread on this forum. I believe there is some information on it under fibro symptoms. If not, I am sure that somebody will come on who is suffering with the same thing as you.

I hope that your pain subsides soon. Best wishes for a wonderful day/night. Take care, keep posting.

Hugs, Karen

Hi MWM and welcome. Most of my fibro pain is from the waist up and I get rib pain, especially if I'm doing something that requires holding my hands above my head or lifting something. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between costochondritis and muscle pain from using the muscles that cover the ribs, pain is pain as far as I'm concerned.

I'm glad you joined us you will learn a lot about fibro on here and have a good laugh too sometimes.

luv and hugs

Thanks for the posts and info. I have heard of costocondritis but don't think that is what is wrong with me (although I think I might have that as well....) The rib pain that really gets me is much worse on the bottom few ribs, far worse when they are "squished" by sitting. When pressed with much pressure they really feel like they are going to break, not that I think they actually will.

At any rate, I am not sure if it is a true Fibro issue or a seperate problem. Marlee, you are totally right that pain is pain but if anyone has had any sucess decreasing this type of pain, I'd love to hear how. I sure haven't had any luck! I will keep reading here & thanks again for the reply!

Hello MWM.  I have Chronic Chostochondritis and I have almost constant pain/pressure in my chest and rib area.  Chostochondritis alot of times goes hand in hand with Fibromyalgia.  Have you tried a heating pad?  I hope the pain gets better for you.  There is some really good information in the Fibro 101 section.
