I take magnesium capsules for Lexapro withdrawal.  I bought a monster bottle of 500mgs which was too high a dosage for me. Instead of throwing them away, I have been opening up the capsules, dumping half of the powder out, then putting the gelatin capsule back together.  I did that this morning...about a half hour later, I let out a breath and this white, powdery mist came flying out of my mouth.  I thought I was going to pass out...couldn't even logically think of what this could be.   I am assuming it was the magnesium...that the capsule didn't dissolve right or didn't go all the way down...I choked half to death last week using this wonderful method as the jagged capsule got stuck in my throat and I literally had to drink a gallon of hot water to dissolve the stupid thing. Yes, I am a moron and am going to buy the right dosage and throw the rest of these gigantic &*(^% in the garbage.  I just hope that's what is was.  Have never had that happen before in my life.   It was like this wandering ghost floating out of my mouth...maybe I'm possessed...LOL!

I am betting not a one of you have ever had this happen before.  It's funny...just yesterday I called the pharmacist and asked why my antibiotic bottle had a warning on it to not sit or lay down for a half hour after taking the pill. (I didn't want to get up at 2 in the morning to take a pill and have to walk around for a half hour)  She said because the gelatin capsules don't dissolve properly unless you are standing.  Hmmm.

Donna, you could sprinkle half of the contents on applesauce instead.  This is what I do with my malic/mag.  I crush them and sprinkle on the applesauce.  This way I swallow the pills and get the added benefit of one serving of fruit twice a day.

Donna, I learned the "take the medicine like you are supposed to" lesson the hard way too.

If I drink too much milk, I have trouble with the lactose, so I keep some Lactaid on hand. For those who haven't ever had them, they are these big, round, CHEWABLE discs. I don't really like the taste, so I got the bright idea to just swallow one instead of chewing it up. Big mistake. That thing lodged in my throat, causing me to gag and cough for about 10 minutes. I thought I was going to have to call 911. Finally, I too got the bright idea to drink a glass of hot water to help it dissolve enough to go all the way down. Fortunately, it worked, and I survived. :) I will never, ever try to swallow a chewable med again!

Donna please behave yourself!!! If you would have inhaled that into your lungs it wouldn't have been a bit funny. One of my DIL's dad inhaled a heart pill and they had to go into his lungs to see what kind of damage it caused and he spent a few days in the hos over it.

Because my throat is always so dry from sjogren's I have to be extra careful when taking dry pills that don't have a slick coating on them.

I swear she does more harm to herself than fibro does shakehead don't know about that woman. smilewinkgrin

Hi Donna,

Thank goodness you are okay....oy! what we do to ourselves! Actually, I have had that happen, but not with magnesium pills. Can't think of what it was right now, but one of my supplements, I take many. I swallowed as usual with water and then suddenly, within a few minutes, there I was, breathing out this white stuff! Scare me half to death!

Why is 500 mg too much? I take magnesium malate pills, and they have 425 mg of magnesium in them, and I take four of them a day. Now I'm wondering if I'm taking too much magnesium???

gentle hugs

Hi Miriam!  500 mgs gave me gas...and I mean GAS...LOL!  That's the only reason I cut them in half.  You aren't taking too much if that dosage agrees with you.  I know Sherrine takes that much also.  I take magnesium oxide for the brain zaps.  As soon as they go away, I'll go on the maleate.

Hi Donna,
I was reading one of the threads and you mention brain zaps. I get them often especially when they have tried different Anti Depressants. I just assumed that was the cause and went off of it and they would try another with no luck. Is this another symptom of fibro. I was diagnosed in April 09, but sometimes I wonder if I have the right diagnoses. I do have pain in different areas of my body especialy my elbows and hips. Achey legs which have been better lately, but the fatigue is what gets me the most. Having bad headaches last few days and unusual itching like being stuck with a pin. Has anyone ever complained of that.  Thanks for any incite.

Hi Lynn...my brain zaps are due to lexapro withdrawal.  It is common to get these sensations when tapering or going off anti depressants...or switching to another kind of SSRI.  Anxiety can also cause them...don't think they are a symptom of fibro.

sounds like the magnesium is rough stuff ... take it the WRONG WAY by MOUTH .. you spit out dry powder ghosts. take too much ... you something jumps out of your other end. Hmm .... sounds like some amazing stuff! I was just thinking of getting some ... but now maybe I'll just stick with the advil. LOL

just kidding ... seriously though .. glad you're ok.
