Hi everyone,

I have a question about a side effect I'm experiencing. My list of medications is in the signature line below.

I've only started the Clonidine and Flexiril recently and since I have, I've noticed my voice seems huskier and I've been experiencing some dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). I can't eat bread or anything with that type of texture, without it "sticking" in my throat. I have to drink water or something else to help the food go down, and that was never a problem before.

Has anyone experienced this before? I know dry mouth is a common side effect in drugs, and I certainly have that, but this voice thing and swallowing problem are quite new. Definitely not life threatening (it's not an allergic reaction), but I am curious.

Thanks in advance,

Pam

I'm not a doctor but I think a dry mouth could lead to having the swallowing problems because there isn't enough saliva to moisten the food and help moisten the throat.  If I have a bad cold with a dry throat, my voice will be huskier, too.  But, talk to your doctor.  Right now, you could call your pharmacist and they could probably tell you, too.

Here is a link about dry mouth and clonidine.

Pam, I have also had the nissen surgery probably 13 or 14 yrs ago, I know it was before all this other stuff started, and when I could eat breads I had to be careful and wash it down or it seemed to get stuck. I have heard they have impoved the surgery since I had it done. I can not vomit either and if I do burp it takes me by surprise cause I rarely do it.

I also take clonodine to get my BP down if it goes real high and my other meds aren't doing the job, my BP is all over the place. I take several meds that can cause dryness but when I have to take clonodine it dries me out even more. I also have sjogren's to add to the mix so I have to be very careful when I eat cause I choke very easily. I have to carry water with me everywhere I go cause my throat gets so dry I start gagging and can be quite embarrassing. Talking only makes it worse.

My voice is lower than it use to be but I attributed it to smoking but maybe it's not.

Gee isn't life just a barrel of laughs???

luv and hugs

Pam
Your oxycontin and tramacet can also cause dry mouth.

Thank you everyone! I will mention it to my doctor when I see her next, just to be safe, but I assumed it was being caused by the drugs and nothing to worry about. I'm like you Marlee...I've started carrying water with me everywhere.

I appreciate the information everyone...thanks!

And to top it all off, the fibro can affect your vocal cords and esophageal muscles (the muscles that control the swallow reflex and passing of food down the esophogus) the same way it affects your legs, arms, neck and shoulders... and every other muscle. I have a friend with fibro who had to quit choir because she experienced so much throat pain from singing that she couldn't keep doing it.

Might want to have a little chat with your pharmacist about your meds and side effects. He/she has a super computer with all the stuff that could possibly be going on with your prescriptions. And the advice is free!!! turn
