Hi all, brand new to this place, but have a few questions. I over the past year or two have noticed increased pain and tenderness in various parts of my body, not necessarily excruciating until recently......my right arm, mainly bicep and shoulder, and at times my forearm. My sleep is completely messed up, it takes me forever to fall asleep, and I wake up it seems like every hour or two, sometimes woken by pain, other times I just wake up for nothing. I do experience cluster type headaches and occasionally I have very stiff and painful neck, right below the back of my head. My arm and shoulder hurt so much, i have to lift my right arm with my left just to pick objects up. I've had hubby massage it, and it causes a deeper and sometimes burning pain?shocked I also seem to be having trouble with my eyes, they water like a faucet when i am outside and it's cold and windy, to the point that i can't see, it's embarrassing as i have had people ask if i'm ok because they think I am crying, LOL I came to this board after doing a pain assessment on online, everytime i did one it pointed to fibro.....I also had diagnosis of endometriosis about 15 years ago, and have had two LAPs done, is this something that can set it off? I am 47 years old btw and wonder if menopause is a trigger, and one more thing, LOL sorry for such a long post......a year ago i fell down my stairs and cracked my left rib, not sure if that can set things in motion either.........please anyone's input is greatly appreciated, am seeing my doc next week and would like some advice on what questions I can ask him.

Hi, azheart, and welcome!  I'm glad you found us and joined in.

Much of what you describe could be fibromyalgia.  Check out the Fibro 101 thread...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to good info about fibro, including a list of symptoms.  You might see yourself there!  Also, fibro is triggered by a myriad of things...including things you have gone through.  For me, I didn't have anything that I can think of that happened.  I was watching television when it hit me!

It's important to find a doctor that does treat fibro patients.  Ask before you schedule an appointment.  They will run you through tests to rule out other illnesses first before giving you a diagnosis.  If you do have fibro, they will be able to work with  you and not just "fluff" you off like you are a mental case.  Yes, there still are doctors out there that believe this is all in our heads.

I'm glad you found us and joined our fibro family.  Don't hesitate to ask questions because we are here to help you.  Let us know what you find out, too.  We really do care.  I hope to hear more from you soon.

Hi Azheart,

I too would like to welcome you to the forum. I see that Sherrine has covered most everything. One of the most important things is the fibro101 thread. There is a wealth of information on there. So please read when you get a chance.

As Sherrine stated, they usually do a bunch of tests to rule other things out. So be prepared for that. Fibro does not show up in x-rays or bloodwork. So that is the way they usually diagnose you. Tenderpoint is another way. They will check for tenderpoints on you to see how you react. Sometimes they hurt, sometimes they don't.

I am so glad that you have joined us. Keep posting and let us know how you are doing. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

Hugs, Karen

thanks for such a quick response! I was just on another fibro site, reading about symptoms and triggers, I noticed stress is mentioned. Now at this time my brother is dying, he is passing from liver cancer, hospice has been notified by our family, but his doctor has abondoned him, every doctor who has evaluated him have tried to make him understand he needs the care of hospice but he refuses because he is convinced his oncologist has a miracle treatment. He was admitted with kidney failure to hospital on sat. and docs are trying to track down the onconologist so he can break the news to geoff and sign him up officially with hospice. I noticed the past week since geoff's decline that my pain has worsened, is this from tension? I know my problems can't compare to my brother's, but I can't help but think somehow my pain is connected?

I'm so sorry to hear about  your brother.  Yes, the stress, tension, etc. that goes with that can cause a flare.  Try hot showers and baths and do some deep breathing exercises to help you relax.  Do keep moving.  Go for a walk if the weather is nice in  your area.  These things could possibly help you feel a little better.  I'm sorry  you are going through this.

Hi azheart,

I'm sorry too for what you're going through. Stress can play a big role in flares. I was the main caregiver for both my parents in the last 5 years of their lives; not the heavy stuff - couldn't do that - but companion, go-between with the medical establishment, driver, power of attorney, you name it. My brother lives here but was almost never in the picture. Between June and Oct. of '08 they both passed and I moved my dad 3 times (we discovered in August that he probably had Lou Gehrig's Disease. Nobody in this town understood it or how to make him more comfortable. It was horrible.) I had my usual pain, but kept going, because I had no choice. There was not a spare minute to focus on how MY body felt. Now it's becoming clear to me what a toll it all took. I feel a decade older, almost 2 years later.

I tell this long story to vent!!! and also as a cautionary tale...I sure hope you have more help and support with your brother at this tragic time than I had, so that you can take better care of yourself. We really are here for you on this forum.

Did you check out Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum?  There are links to good info about fibro, including a list of symptoms.  You could print that out and highlight the ones that pertain to you. Also, there is a link with a journal and links with pain charts.  You can keep a daily journal and record, accurately, the pain level you feel when doing things.  This will help your doctor too.

yes i did check out 101 and it's very informative....to ache, your story sounds alot like what i went through with parents and siblings......I wasn't having pain back then so not sure if this is fibro or not...but what ever this is, it seems to have worsened since my brother became ill, I am thankful for this board, it sure helps to talk about the pain as well as life's ups and downs.
