Ugghhh, I have been trying to pass a kidney stone for about a week. I have several a year, but it's something you never get used to. Adding that to the fibro and all of my other pain problems makes me just want to beat my head against the wall, but then my head would hurt too. eyes

*sigh* I just needed to tell somebody (or lots of somebodies) :-)

Wow Austen, I have never had the kidney stones but I have had a bad kidney infection that landed me in the hospital. I can only imagine what it would be like to live with that kind of pain several times a year. I hope and pray that it passes for you soon.

I've never had a kidney stone but I had a neighbor that did so I know they are soooo painful!  Can't they do something so you don't keep getting them?  Is there something in your diet that is causing this?  That has to be terrible but it will soon be over.  Lets pray that this is your last kidney stone!

Thanks everyone. Thankfully, (that's kind of a weird way to put it) I've had so many that the tubes from my kidneys are stretched out, so most of the time it is just uncomfortable (sometimes, intensely so, though).

Sherrine, I have had a gazillion tests, but there is no real answer as to why I get them, genetics most likely. I just try to drink lots of water and stay away from certain dietary items.

It's just a waiting game. I've had to have one removed before (not pleasant), so that is always in the back of my mind when one is taking a long time to "see the light of day." I think worrying about it not passing is sometimes worse than the pain itself.

Thanks everybody for the well wishes that things will get moving along sooner rather than later! smilewinkgrin

Ouch. I sympathize, Austen. A man who owned the company I used to work for was passing either a kidney stone, or a gallstone once while driving his truck. Ugh! He said it was the worst pain he'd ever endured. So I really think you're tough as nails for handling this so well. You are a strong one, for sure. Hope it passes uneventfully and with as little pain as possible. We'll all try to think good thoughts for you on this. *hugs*

Austen,
If you have calcium oxalate stones ask your doc about hydrodiuril, 25 mg a day. This is what my nephrologist put me on in '77 and I have only made one since that time and that was when he dropped me to 12.5 mg a day. Hydrochlorothyazide (generic name) has a side effect that causes you to retain calcium in the blood stream so it doesn't spill out into the urine. Before he started me on this med I had two major events with one stone about the size of a chic pea that had to be removed surgically from my renal pelvis in my kidney... and the other which was done with a basket retrieval from the ureter.

I don't make stones, I make ROCKS! When I was on the 12.5 mg of hydrodiuril I still made a stone that I passed at home about the size of a pearl on a corsage pin. I can remember crawling around on my hands and knees... puking from the pain... No, I don't envy you the pain. Take care.

Austen, I'm very glad that's over! Maybe you'll have a good stretch now for awhile.

Jeannie, you and I could be twins. The largest one I have passed on my own was about the size of a pea. I passed that one at the hospital on the morning I was supposed to have surgery for it. The docs were amazed. I've also had one larger than that removed. Not fun.

I have tried HCTZ, and was able to tolerate it for awhile, but it started making me really weak, shakey, and dizzy, so I had to stop.

I've tried something called Urocit-K (postassium citrate) which helped, but I also stopped that because it really aggravated my GERD. I think I'm going to try it again with larger doses of Prilosec to see if I can tolerate it better.

Has your doctor ever told you to drink lemonade or put lemon in your water? Mine did, and I'm wondering how common that is.

I actually have a doctor's appt. this morning, so I will definitely bring it up.

Thanks for your insight.
