I decided to get into shape ,one more time, after my doctor nagging me for months that I had to lose weight.  I began working out on a fitness machine where I work. I gradually increased the weights to 20 lbs (with 50 reps) or 30 lbs. (with 20 reps). Worked out for about 4 months so far. I have not seen any change in muscle tone, to speak of.  Do you permantley lose muscle tone?

Good question. Welcome to the forum, btw. My muscle tone is about gone, and I do mean GONE. Thirty years ago I was in great shape, but since I can't lift much of anything anymore because of fibro pain (what you describe doing would be a dream come true for me) I am skinny and flabby. I'd like to think that someday I could get some of it back, but every time I've tried any type of PT, reality smacks me in the face.

Have you lost any weight, since you said that was your goal?

Hi Carolina,

Welcome to the HealingWell Fibromyalgia Forum...  I am so happy that you have joined us.

Do you have any body fat?  If so, the muscles are toning underneath of it.  And remember, muscle burns fat.  So if you do, don't get impatient.  It just takes time.  Muscle toning takes time anyway.  Just keep at it.  It can't hurt you so there is no wrong there.  I lift light weights for muscle tone.  And it works, plus walk for the aerobic part of it.

I would like to welcome you to the forum and direct you to a thread called fibro101.  It is the first thread on the forum.  I think it would do you good to read when you get a chance.  There is a wealth of information there.  I think you will enjoy it.

Keep posting and let us know how you are doing.

Hi, Carolina, and welcome!  You are in good shape!  I can barely carry a ten pound bag of potatoes in the house.  If I went to a gym and worked out, I'd be leaving on a stretcher!  And, yes, I do not have muscle tone.  I don't think most of us could do what you are doing.  Really, it would be interesting to see if you do build muscles.  As I said, most of us can't do what you are doing and I'm thrilled to hear that you CAN do that!  You are an amazing lady.  But, please let us know how it goes for you.

I'm so glad you joined our family.  Don't hesitate to ask questions and we will try to answer them for you.  I hope to hear more from you soon.

Thank you for the welcome. I have lost about 20 pounds. Not near enough. I can only excercise about 20 minutes a day. Any more and the fibro screams. I can't walk since I have plantar fasciitis in both feet. It just seems that more tone should show up by now.

Try Birkenstock shoes.  I had plantar faciitis in both feet and this took care of the problem for me.  It took a while to get used to the shoes but the more I wore them, the less my feet hurt.  Now it's all gone and I can walk barefoot!

I did try Birkenstock, twice. Didn't work for me. I have orthotics for my shoes and wear new balance with everything. New fashion statement!

If you can walk at all, keep doing so.  Just take extra steps when you can.  You must keep moving.  Or you will become stiff.  Hope that this helps some.
