I had my first session of acupuncture today and already it seems to have calmed me down. Whilst there I explained the role of serotonin in fibromyalgia and was told that there is a product that is a precursor to serotonin called 5 HTP. It enables the body to produce more serotonin. Does anybody know anything about it or has had any experiences with it (good or bad)? I have down a little google search and it seemed promising.
Thanks

This info comes from Dr. Andrew Weil's web site - it is about the use and his misgivings about 5 HTP. It might help give another perspective for you.

Hi Alfie!

I hope the acupuncture continues to help you. Many people do have good comments about it's use. But I would be very leery about taking something like 5-HTP. I too looking around the net and most of what I found was people trying everything trick in the book to sell it to people who are desperate...and IMHO that would include people who live with chronic pain. In the past there have been an untold number of substances that claim to "produce" more pleasure hormones in the brain and can cure everything from obesity to toe fungus...lol (sorry, couldn't resist that one) But there are no solid, double blind studies that I could find that shows this product to work. I did fine a fair number of warnings about taking it in conjunction with other medications as it can produce drastic side effects. I included one tidbit and a link to some information on this 'product'.

If you want to try it I would recommend you talk to your doctor about it. He will know any interactions between it and others you might be taking. At least that way you will be safe. Let us know how you do. By sharing our ideas, thoughts and opinions it helps so many others make more informed decisions in their own medical care.

Hugs,
Chutzie
