I woke this morning to rib pain. I have finally been sleeping and feeling a bit better due to a heating pad that is my new best friend. Today it feels like I have a finger stuck in the bottom rib on both sides and like I somehow bruised them (that bottom rib hurts to touch).  The rest of my ribs, both front and back, are aching. The ache changes from moment to moment, had two instances where a sharper pain took my breath away and it was gone as fast as it hit. My breast bone does not seem sore. Does this sound like costochon...? ( I can't spell it. lol)

I even tried using the heating pad on my ribs, but it didn't seem to do any good.  The only irritation that is constant is that "fingers in the ribs" bruised feeling...

I'm thinking of investing in an electric blanket...maybe that way I can hit EVERY area that needs it EVERY night. Lol!

Hi, I was just telling my hubby that I was having chest pain. The only way I can think of describing the pain is like someone is hugging me so tight that my ribs hurt. I'm also having a hard time getting a deep breath. Does anyone know, is this normal for Fibro? Or could it be more on the line of RA? Since I have that too. Well, luvskermit I hope you feel better. I too have a deep ongoing relationship with my heating pad. ;)
Take care,
Deb

Hi there,
I know exactly what you are talking about. I broke my rib about a year ago while fishing and recently it feels like I've injured it again. Now, I know that I haven't but it certainly feels like it did a year ago. Some days are much more painful than others and then it's gone. I can't handle heat of any kind so that won't work for me. I wish you better days, hopefully this will pass for you quickly.

take care,

Nana

You could be feeling inflammation around the sternum/rib area if you are suffering from costochondritis. It might be worth a trip to your doctor to find out - anti-inflammatories and pain meds are usually recommended as treatment.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Hugs,
Pam

I too have had burning/stinging pain around my entire rib cage...feels bruised when I touch it.  I have been on the heating pad for days. It's tolerable when I'm laying down but when I stand up 'gravity' pulls at the muscles and makes it worse.  Don't know...this is a new one for me.

The rib pain is the more annoying of the FM pain for me....maybe because it is more of a stabbing pain than the other pains....
Oddly enough ibuprofen seems to help this pain....
It does hinder the breathing because we have a tendency to hold our breath or not fully inhale when we expect it to hurt....

You are normal and sorry that I cannot help you be rid of it......

It does sound like costochondritis.  There is a link about this in Fibro 101.  I have it too and ibuprofen with food does help it some.  But it does hurt to take a good breath.  We tend to breathe shallowly as it is.  Hmmm...is shallowly a word?  I guess it is now!  turn

I don't know if the rib pain is a normal part...but I sure have alot of it...into the chest too. I too can barely get a decent breath when it hurts real bad. It feels like a huge charlie horse waiting to happen if I breathe too deep. I doubt it would but it feels like it. I like to lay on the floor and have my hubby just set his foot on my back and rest it there. It helps that spot relax so I can get a few good deep relaxing breaths...then he shifts to the next spot. It is our home version of myofascial release therapy...lol.

I have been dealing with costochondritis for a long time now. Sounds like you may have it too. My PC dx me and gave me a perscription for predisone and pain medicine. It helped some but the pain came back. Heating pad is the best thing for me.

Sorry you are in pain.
