As I was leaving Lifesource today, after donating a pint, I saw a letter posted stating that if anyone has been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, it is best that they do not give blood. Now, depending how you you talk to, some say FM and CFS are the same...just wondering if anyone here donates blood and if so, have you ever had a flare from it? This is only the second time I have donated and the first time, I was fine...
thanks so much

Hi Miriam,

That's a really interesting sign you saw. I'm curious to know what prompted them to put CFS and not Fibro as well.

I recently made a donation to a organization that matches donors for bone marrow. I was just curious and looking to see who they say cannot donate bone marrow. I have always wanted to since I have known multiple people to suffer from leukemia, however, I cannot due to a blood disorder. I was SHOCKED to see that Fibro was on their list. I had never heard of any problems with our blood before! My only guess is that since they have no idea what causes these conditions they are being cautious?

Boy, I"m surprised to hear that, too!  I think your guess, Frankey, is probably accurate but I'll try to research it out when I have time.  Interesting...

I'm back.  Okay, you cannot donate bone marrow if you have an autoimmune illness.  I clicked on "autoimmune illnesses" and there was a list and fibromyalgia was on that list!  I've always been told it isn't an autoimmune problem.  Below is a link about fibro from the National Institute of Health and they refer to autoimmune illnesses but don't say fibro is one of them!  So, since they don't know what causes this, they are probably being careful and stuck this lousy illness under "autoimmune illnesses".

I know I'm unable to donate as I use HGH. I'm kind of curious as many of these
diseases like RA are blood borne. I received 2 units of blood about 4 years ago and
life will never be the same. After reading "Change of Heart" where a woman got
a heart transplant and then began taking on the donors traits I wondered if it was
real...Yup it is. My best friends husband got 52 units and his hair went from nonexistant
to a full head of pure white hair and curly. Looked like a totally different person.

WOW, Nana!  That didn't happen to me.  I've had four blood transfusions, too.  I didn't notice any difference.  If this happens, I'll pray that any transfusions I get are from women who are a size 8!  turn

Hmm, that IS interesting! SO WEIRD about your friend's husband, Nana!!

I've never given blood, just because I figured I don't have any extra strength to be giving away. I've also never gotten a flu shot (at least not that I can remember) - my doctor said the information was conflicting, so it was up to me - so I've just decided not to put anything else into the mix unless I have to.

I did get 2 Hepatitis (A, B or C, who knows?) injections a few years ago, because apparently I have minimal liver damage (for some unknown reason.) He didn't give me a choice on that one.

Our bodies are such mysteries. If only they came with manuals!!

I was diagnosed with fibro after having all the other autoimmune diseases ruled out...after a number of antibody specific ANA's done and they all came back in the normal range.  (one was $1000!)  My rheumy said fibro was not autoimmune...but who knows???  I guess anything is possible! idea

The hardest thing for me is being someone who loved coffee to only being able
to drink it in certain places (Dunkin Donuts or Cool Beans) and only if it's a
fresh pot. I call her the "Coffee Broad" as she hated coffee. My choices are now
severely limited.

There are so many things that float in our bodies that it's hard to imagine some of
them. My friend has a relative who got donated blood from a friend who was a hard
match. The donater came down with cancer, a year later the recipient also came
down with the same type of cancer. The cells are so microscopic that I wonder if
it's possible to screen for so many things. I know my Dad had Yellow Jaundice,
Hepititis and Pnumonia all at once and was told he could never donate. My Man
was in Saudi and was told the same thing.
