Hi there kids!  Well, last week I went in for my second root canal in a year on an upper front  tooth that just crumbled.  I got home and later in the evening, I got pain in another lower front tooth that was on the other side.  I thought it was from that monster bite plate I had to chomp down on for over an hour that was right on that tooth....maybe it was just irritated.  Then the tooth got really sensitive and I could not eat.  Today I went back to my regular dentist, he took an xray and was appalled.  In 18 months I have lost 70% of the bone and at least 30% of my gum line.  He asked me if I had been on any benzo's, SSRI's or Ambien type sleeping pills lately.  I told him I had just weaned off lexapro and valium, which I took for fibro.  He was very confident that these drugs were the culprit as he had seen it on many patients before.

Well...these medications can cause extreme dry mouth and bruxism in some people.  I know they did for me and even had to get a mouth guard while on Lexapro.  My mouth is as dry as the desert and chap stick is on me at all times.  A week after I stopped Lexapro I had severe gingivitus and had to have several deep scalings.  Before these drugs, I never had any kind of oral issues that warranted treatment.

So....if you take any drugs in this class, FLOSS, drink plenty of water and make sure you are not grinding your teeth as that will wear the bone down.  Also be careful of some of the more potent whitening tooth pastes...they are very abrasive and can destroy the enamel which also has happened to me.  Please do NOT ignore any sign that something is not right with your teeth as this destruction can happen in a few short months without the enzymes in you saliva to prevent decay.

I am off to the periodontist tomorrow to see if there is any hope for me to be able to save my teeth!!  People on this forum talk about medication side effects daily...I never realized this was one of them!!

Donna, you are not alone my friend, I have dental reabsorption and have been losing teeth like crazy. I never had problems before all my diagnoses and taking all the crazy meds. I see my dentist 2-3 a year for check ups.

If you are taking any osteoporosis meds such as boniva or the other bisphosphonates you have the added trouble of having any dental surgery done, especially if you have been on these type of meds for a long time.

I've had consults with oral surgeons who will not even remove root tips for fear of bone necrosis....meaning it will not heal and the bone dies.

Donna is correct in saying to make sure you floss and drink plenty of water.

I just wanted to add that there is an autoimmune disease called Sjogren's Syndrome that affects the salivary glands and tear glands, it does mimic fibro in that you have the achiness and fatigue but you have the added features of dry eyes and dry mouth. Many people with this disorder have extreme dental issues. Most doctors check for this when making their diagnosis for fibro.

Wishing you luck Donna...some of these meds are crazy!!!!

Thanks for this thread. I was on medication for osteopenia for several years and I didn't have any extra issues with my teeth but I do floss and drink a lot of water.

My question is I just began a medication called Gabapentin last night. I woke clenching my teeth this morning. Luckily I have removable retainers from having braces. What are benzo's and ssri's? Might Gabapentin be one of these?

Thanks!

I am happy to say the only medication I take is ibuprofen at night to sleep along with my supplements for sleeping. I am on a regiment of different supplements, I eat very nutritiously, and ever since my injury years ago I have been doing my prescribed stretches x2 daily.

I'm sorry, Donna. I've lost count of the number of root canals (and re-treatment root canals, and apicoectomies) I've had to have, and I know how much it stinks. I'm not even taking any meds that cause dry mouth; I just have it naturally, or I guess it's a result of the fibro. I didn't realize, either, that those meds could cause dental issues.

I practice excellent oral hygiene, but there's only so much you can do I guess. I've come to accept dental pain as just part of my overall fibro pain.

Dh and I joke that we could have bought a small car with all of the money I've spent on dental work - except it's not really a joke. shocked rolleyes

I hope everything works out and the periodontist is able to offer you some solutions.

Hugs - Austen

Thank you all for your thoughts and good wishes!  I woke up with a Meniere's attack today and am waiting to see if the spinning stops before I go to the periodontist.  I called and they said to wait until the last minute to see...I would not be able to sit back in a chair at the moment.  It's always something!

Almostmedfree....SSRI's are antidepressants like Lexapro, Zoloft and Effexor.  They are often used off label  to control  pain as they boost seratonin.  Benzo's are Valium, Xanax, Klonopin and Ativan and may prescribed for muscle spasms.  According to to what I have read, people do complain about teeth grinding and clenching on the drug you are taking but as we know, everyone reacts differently to these meds.  I would just be very aware that this is happening and mention it to your doctor if it doesn't improve.  My clenching has all but made dust out of the bone that support my teeth....and it happened over the course of months, not years!

Austen, I have had dry mouth also...before the drugs but nothing like this.  I was told it was part of fibro but going on the drugs only made it worse.

Sherrine, Achey and Robin....I WUV you all!

Oh, if anyone knows...is surgery for severe periodontal disease covered by Medicare or any supplemental insurance?  This is going to cost more than a new car! (I tried to look it up on the Internet but it's too confusing and written in lawyer speak!)

Unfortunately, it isn't covered.  But my dentist has about 40 different dental insurance plans we can get and they tell you the one that is best for what you need to have done.  It saves thousands of dollars and I don't think you need to continue with the policy after the first year.  So, be sure to ask about that.

I LOVED Rosanne Rosannadanna!  That was the funniest character on the old Saturday Night Live program.  Wish they had those in reruns!
