Hello all,
I was just thinking back about the one test over the years that has been abnormal....my liver enzymes. They have been abnormal (elevated ) since my early twenties. No hx of abusing my liver! They are ok as of a few years ago, I'm 40 now. Anyone else have this? ??? Fibro related??? Maybe has to do with the possible viral origin? IDK...food for thought. Thanks for your input ahead of time :-)

Elevated liver enzymes are caused from inflammation in the liver.  Since fibromyalgia isn't an inflammatory illness to begin with, I highly doubt that this is the reason you have this problem.  There are a myriad of things that can cause this, including medications.  I take a couple of things that can inflame my liver but I haven't had a problem so far.  I have a lot of inflammation that shows up in my blood work but my liver is fine, thank God.

Here is a link that tells you various things that could cause this problem.  Is your doctor treating you for this?

Hi tropical isle, I have a problem with elevated liver enzymes from time to time. Mine are caused by one of my meds...methotrexate that I take for MCTD, an autoimmune disease. I need to be on this immunosuppressant. Lately I've been having my blood checked every 3 weeks compared to my normal of every 6-8 weeks because of recent elevation.

There are a number of meds that can cause elevated liver enzymes. If you take acetaminiphen every day there is a chance of elevated liver enzymes.

Ask your doctor about the meds you are on and how they affect you. You may be able to make some changes.

Good luck to you!

hugs, Robin

Tropicalisle,

I've had elevated liver enzymes for a long time, too. When diagnosed with fibro in about 1992, my new doc discovered this...at the time it was just one enzyme. He took me off the Synthroid that I had been on for over 20 years, (and apparently didn't need anymore.) Unfortunately, that didn't help with the enzyme level. We never could figure this out. A liver specialist said it probably wasn't worth a biopsy, not then, anyway.

Since gallbladder surgery 5 years ago, I now have 2 that are elevated. They did do a biopsy during the surgery, and told me I have very mild liver disease, (Cholestasis, I think?) and that "I'd obviously led a clean life." ? How that goes together, I'm not sure. My doc never seems too concerned about this, except when it comes to too many narcotics, and I don't like taking them, either...but right now I have to (long story - another thread!)

Anyway, now I also have Hashimoto's.

I'm glad your enzymes are back to normal! Do you know what you did right?

Sherrine,
Thanks for the website. I will read it. I don't think it was enough to worry the docs much, but it stayed slightly elevated for 15 years. Back then I used Excedrin, but way under the (tylenol) safe dosage per 24 hours. Also never more than 1 gram per 4-6 hours. We are very sensitive though.
Robyn,
Thanks for the input. It is funny how it goes up and down with some of us. I hope you can continue the meds you need. I work with and have b ecome close with a gal that has lupus. We have more in common than other coworkers .....unfortunately lol

Interesting! I had my gallbladder removed at 21. They say nothing will be affected, but I had severe diarrhea for years after (IBS). My docs never worried about the elevated liver enzymes either. I don't know why they're norm now.

Tropicalisle- I was reading your post about having your gallbladder removed. I had mine removed many years ago. I got the same trouble as you did. I finally have figured out a good remedy for mine. Do you still have trouble?

Hello AK Angel,
It got better through the years, but I do have IBS rolleyes It acts up if I eat spicy or greasy food. For years after my gallbladder was removed, I would have explosive diarrhea 15-30 minutes after eating......and severe cramping! I hated to eat out, because I couldn't make it home before an attack. Sweating, and almost in tears for about 20 or 30 minutes before I could fully be finished.
I would love to hear what has helped you! I do better when I eat right, ut the veges an legumes still bloat me. Lol turn

I too have elevated liver enzymes. Had my gallbladder removed in jan 2011, still elevated. I too have fibromyalgia.. I have also had two misscarriages in a row:(... But I am convinced these are all related! I'm praying I find a good doctor that can really take the time to listed and tell me what is going on! I'm a 25yo.. Too young for this! Also I had a recent episode of severe itching which only lasted about a day. Someone help!

Hello Adi and welcome. Yes young, I was 20 when my gallbladder was removed. I have read several times lately during research that Thyroid problems can also cause elevated liver enzymes. I have Hashimoto's and my tsh is 17 high and I have been real sick.....it flares my fibro also. I also had thyroid ultrasound and have nodules and masses. 1 of the masses is suspicious, so I need an u/s guided fine needle biopsy...
Scary. Hashi's is autoimmune. By the way my liver enzymes are elevated even higher now.

Looking at your Med list in your signature, both motrin and benadryl are processed thru the liver and can effect enzymes....so can tylenol..its probably the worst aside from statins

As I was reading I noticed many have had their Gallbladder removed. I too had mine removed. The weird thing about it was about a year before I had it removed I had an ultrasound and it was a-ok. Then he had another ultrasound done a year later due to pain in that area. It was so full that the Dr. was shocked. I had to go in asap to have it removed. Fibro is a strange one. Such a mystery.
