I have AIH and have been on various doses of Pred. for the last 6-7 yrs. I have developed bursitis in my hip and the ortho doc wants me to get a coritsone injection. One of the nurses at my doc office expressed concern that it will increase bone loss. However my doc said it was ok. has anyone had any experience with this that they could share??

Thanks!! :-)

LilacLove, hi there. Long term prednisone use causes bone loss as you know.(Along with other problems) but is medically necessary for some illnesses. Having a cortisone injection (1 time) should not have any significant side effects. The benefit is usually very effective and I myself would do it.

LilacLuv: I was told not to take anything without the approval of the transplant teams approval. I recently had a ReClast infusion for my severe bone loss. So now I am extremely cautious about anything it take. I never knew my bone loss was so bad till evel. I have three different types of arthritis. Was aware of two but wasent aware of the ostoperosis. Which is the bone loss prob. Still don"t understand why so many hep. patients take prednisone. The only thing I am on for the liver is the lactulose for encephalopathy.
I had injections of cortisone about 10 years ago for the bone spur on the heel of my foot. I could only take 3 peryear. They helped for a while. But did'nt have real relief from the pain till I had surgery. Now it"s the other foot and they will not allow me to have even minor surgery. So if I don't have one pain it's another. Good luck if you try it. Hope it works for you. june
