Hello to you all.  I have a few questions about my Dad.  about four years ago, he was
hospitalized and diagnosed with an acute cirrohtic event.  After seven days in the hospital, he was released and told not to drink alcohol any more and that he did have cirrhosis.  Around December, he began to retain fluid in his abdomen.  He lays and sleeps constantly.  He says he feels bloated after only eating a small amount.  He doesn't have bowel movements but once every four to five days.  He has muscle wasting and his color is a greyish cast.  He is cold all of the time.  He will not go back to his doctor b/c of his "fear."  I called his doctor and he phoned-in prescriptions of diuretics, which my dad takes erratically.  He eats whatever he pleases -- lots of red sauces, pasta, lunch meats, and many sweets.  He also has no teeth which makes his eating worse...  He is very afraid of dying but won't go see his "liver doc."  By the way, he does not drink at all, takes Atavan for his anxiety, and smokes two to three packs of cigarettes daily.  My mom and I don't know what to expect in the upcoming months.  I feel for my Dad as a person...however, he has always been quite difficult and unloving toward my mom, my brothers, and me (and all of our children).  I would like to know what's next...I can handle it....how long does he have and how much worse are his symptoms going to get?  Will he be hospitalized?  By the way, he doesn't make great sense at all times and forgets what you tell him.  Thanks in advancefor any insights into his progression.
Regards, RACU

Hello Racu and welcome to HealingWell. Sorry that you have to go through this with your father. Education is the key to being prepared for all the trials and tribulations that your father will go through. There is a lot of good info in the older posts so please take an hour or so and read some of them. They will answer most of your questions. Have your mom come on this forum. She's going to need people to support her that actually knows what she's going through. It's not going to be a fun ride as you can probably guess. Once you familiarized yourself with Liver Disease and still have any questions and concerns or just need support we are the folks to help you. Take care..........thoughts and prayers.

Hello Racu, Ask your father's doctor about Lactolose. They use it for the encephalopy. It's the medicine that brings down the ammonia levels. It will make him go to the bathroom a lot more often than he's going now. Take care ......thoughts and prayers.

Hi Racu, I just wanted to welcome you to the forum. There is no real way of knowing how long a person will survive with cirrhosis. The disease effects each person differently. I hope you have found some of the other posts helpful. This site has been very helpful to me.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
