Hello Velocity and welcome to HealingWell. I am pretty sure that there are a few others taking it. My husband's GI doctor told him not to. And we didn't think to ask his Hepatologist until very near the end. Which he said yes that it couldn't hurt. (By that time there was nothing left that they could do for him.)

I keep thinking..........would there have been a different outcome if he had started taking it 4 years earlier? I'll never know.

Have you spoken to your Hepatologist about it? If not.....it can't hurt to talk to him about it.

Thoughts and prayers..........

Hi, Velocity!  Welcome to the forum!  I have hep C, genotype 1, stage 3.  I was diagnosed in '93.  Before trying Interferon (the only treatment available at that time), I tried milk thistle.  The printed info I was given, by a friend with hep C, stated that no carbonated beverages were allowed, no coffee, etc.  There were a lot of things to be eliminated in combination with milk thistle ingestion.  I only took it for about 6 wks. (and didn't give up soda or coffee, etc.) and my liver enzymes actually rose.  I also had diarrhea from it and it burned my behind.  However, the friend who had given me the info on milk thistle, was said to have eliminated the hep C from her body.

I would also advise checking with your hepatologist to see if he/she considers it harmful.  If not, then it's up to you...unless you are currently taking the approved treatment.  Have you, or are you now, on treatment?  If so, then it may be contraindicated.

I have taken Milk Thistle for years (+ some other supplements), 1000MG daily. I credit it partly for my hanging in there. Its certainly no cure but it seems to help my liver remain stable. My personal goal is to keep my liver disease (Hep C) from progressing.

If you're considering it - ensure you get good quality (I take organic, you get what you pay for) & double check its source (avoid Chinese herbs - no quality control or regulation). As always check with Hepatologist if you plan to take anything outside Dr. regimen.

Thanks guys for your input. I will ask Doctor about taking it and see what he thinks. As for your question Hep93, yes I tried treatment last January after 12 of treatment it was stop, treatment increased my count bid time so that was that. They said, they hope in five years for some new treatments, but after trying the Interferon, I really don't know if I would put myself through it again cause it for sure would be a 72 week treatment time and cure odds have to be better. So for now I just enjoy life.

Velocity, did you mean it increased your prothrombin time?  Your ability to clot?  When I took interferon, it made my white count plummet.  I'm told there are medications now to manage the side affects.

Hugs,
Connie

Hep93 it was my viral load that went up ..base line was in the 3 million jack up into the 9 million and never came back down after 12 weeks. I was treated for 3 side affects within the first month, ya my body wasn't ready to fight this yet but I will fight it back again one day I'm sure.

Thanks for clarifying that for me, Velocity.  Hopefully, they will come up with something not so harsh in the near future.  I'm waiting for that, too.

Hugs,
Connie
