I have liver disease. I have been on interferon before. Are there no new treatments coming up? The problem is made worse by serious bouts with depression.

Thanks!

Hi, Manyvoices, and welcome to the forum!  From the little you posted, I assume you have hep C?  Were you on the "combo?"  That is the current treatment; however, there are newer treatments being developed and some may be in clinical trials now.  My Mayo hepatologist told me that she is to be alerted if there is a clinical trial for which I might be a good candidate.  Are you being seen by a hepatologist?

Welcome Manyvoices....
You have chosen the right group to join. I myself have ESLD and HEP C with everything else that goes with it. I knocked myself out of depression. Life is too short. I do a lot of pretending to feel OK for my family and friends and always keep a smile on my face. Laughter is my best medicine even on the bad days. Hang in there and again welcome

Welcome to the forum Manyvoices. I'm sorry that you are dealing with liver disease. It can be very depressing. Has it been awhile since you did the combo treatment (if that is what you did)? The treatment can cause depression that lasts awhile after completing it.

Welcome to the forum Manyvoices

I think that some form of depression is very typical with any liver disease but it is very important to try and not let the depression affect your quality of life. There are many anti-depressants out there that may be able to help you cope with thing begin to seem overwhelming and out of control. Please keep your spirits up and remember this is wonderful place to vent our frustrations.

Welcome!

I have just started Infergen for Hep C which is Interferon Combo X 7. Small studies have shown the higher dose to be extremely effective (if it doesn't kill you first).

I did Pegasys but did not clear. It takes a year post treatment to feel normal.

The only new treatment in trial that looks to be even marginally successful in terms of getting passed by the FDA is a protease inhibitor with combo treatment.

 Best, Cary

I should also have mentioned diet as a factor in feeling better.  Try to eat a lot of fresh fruit and veggies and little meat.  Avoid beef, as it is difficult for the liver to digest.  nono    Get your protein in beans and milk products.  Drink a lot of pure water.  I broke down last night and made myself a hamburger, and I'm paying for it today by feeling much more fatigued and sleepy than usual.  cry   I usually make turkey burgers.

Cary, how are you doing on the new treatment?  Is it a combo of injections and pills?  How long does the treatment last in total?

Hugs,
Connie

Hi Kathy and welcome to the forum.

I have AIH and can tell you that the extreme fatigue is normal with liver diseases. Even on medication I still have days that it is difficult to accomplish anything except napping. Looking at others posts it seems this is true for most people. I also experience pain my the upper left quadrant, even radiates around my back. Sometimes it resembles a dull ache and others it is a sharp stabbing pain.

It may be helpful for you if you start a new topic and introduce yourself to the group. Sometimes people over look a thread if they have replied before so a new thread would give you a chance for more responses.

Again welcome to the forum. Everyone here is so helpful and great listeners.

Good luck on your journey.
