Hi, eclare, and welcome to the forum. It does sound like your sister has end-stage liver disease and cirrhosis. Since you said that she is a heavy drinker, she would not be eligible for a transplant until she has been sober in AA or alcohol counseling for 6 mos. They are probably just trying to stabilize her. Nutrition is a big part of her health status. They are giving her diuretics for swelling/ascites. If the ascites (fluid in the belly) is excessive, they may drain her. There is really nothing they can do except treat the symptoms. Her attitude and willingness to cooperate with diet and medication can go a long way towards slowing the progression of her cirrhosis. Reading the posts here will give you an idea of what to expect. You will get a lot of information and support in this forum.
