Hi Everyone,

I have not posted for a while but have been reading all your posts.  I was diagnosed with AIH in 06 and was on Prednisone for over a year and was able to successfully wean off with the help of my Hep doctor at the Center for liver diease in Miami.  I have been good for a year and yesterday I received a call from my doctor saying my levels were up to AST 76 ALT 122 it was a schock because for a year they have been completely normal.  I was so sure I was cured that I statred having some drinks on the weekend and went back to Advil and vitamins not being careful of what I was taking.  I was just at my Hep Doctor in Miami two weeks ago and she had suggested I start on Urso to protect my liver since I needed to take a statin.  The head guy down there Dr. Schiff feels it is a good alterative if you cannot take prednisone and doea not have the side effects.  Well I am waiting now to hear back from my doctor on what to do next luckily I have my blood tested every month so I caught it early I even took 5mg of prednisone and will continue to take it until I hear back from my doctor and hopefully stop it from going out of control.  I had my second liver biopsy in Dec 07 and it showed not inflamation and very little scarring the same day I was rushed back to the hospital with my gall bladder and had it removed so of course I convinced myself that it was my gall bladder all along and not AIH.

Has anyone tried Urso instead of Prednisone and if so, how did it work.  Now I am off everything again because they are not sure what kicked this off again.  I know I am going on and on but thanks for listening.

Hi, Jerry.  It's good to hear from you again.  I think if there's a lesson to be learned from this it's that anyone who has or has had liver disease should never ease up on precautions.  Your liver is never going to be a healthy one, and to pretend that it is is flirting with disaster.  I am speaking particularly of drinking alcohol again, be it only one or two here and there.

I am glad that the problem was caught early on and hopefully you can get your AIH under control again.  Be sure to keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Jerry

I take urso along with prednisone and imuran. Urso was the first medication I was on and it did bring my alkaline phosphate level down but not my ALT or AST's. I had no side effects from the medication at all (except for my wallet as even with insurance it is expensive). The way it was explained to me it is a bile salt synthetic that helps thin bile salt to aid in food absorption and to help with portal hypertension. My alkaline phosphate levels were always 4 to 5 times higher than the normal range. Hope this helps you.

Lucy,

Thanks for the information I also told the Dr is was too expensive and that my insurance company said they have a generic Ursodiol which the hep Doctor agreed would be fine.  However, the only thing elevated for me are my AST and ALT the rest are all normal.  They felt that this drug would protect my liver and that I can remain on this instead of prednisone.  Sometimes I wonder if they really know what they are doing.
