Hi All,

Well as some of you know I have autoimmune hepatitis I have been in complete remission no meds for a year.  Recently my liver levels started to elevate my last blood test was AST 74 down from 78 and ALT 143 up from 122.  My Hep Doc stated me on Ursodiol 1200 mg, 5 mg of Prednisone, and 500mg of Milk Thistle with weekly blood test.  After my latest numbers I asked if I should increase prednisone and she said they want to do another liver biopsy.  I have had two in a year and a half and the last one punctured my gall bladder and I almost died with the infection.  The previous two biopsy showed very little inflamation and no fibrois.  Has anyone with these levels been told to have multiple liver biopsies?  I feel they are dangerous and do not tell the story.

Jerry, perhaps it is different with AIH, but in most liver diseases biopsies really do tell what is going on better than anything else.

Is your hepatologist the one who would do the biopsy?  If so, did he do the other 2?  I can understand that you would not want to have another biopsy done by the doc who punctured your gall bladder.  Just remember that you have the right to refuse any type of diagnostic procedure or treatment at any time.
