Good morning everyone. My name is carol. I am usually in the Lupus group. I hope you don't mind my guestion but I thought if anyone would know it would be you.
Ok so I need a lung transplant. I may have up to two years if the pulm therapy works less if not. Anyway I'm 51 years old and one of the questions on the evaluation was Would I take a lung from someone who had hepatitis? The cause of death could have been from a car crash or anything. The dr. has given me my first shot for hep A and hep B. He said that with the series of shots it would be next to impossible for me to contract hepatitis. I hope this question doesn't upset anyone. I am an organ donor and if I don't make it I hope my organs will help someone else.
So the question is, knowing when you guys know would you agree to take the lung or not?
Thank you for your information and may God bless.

Hello Carol and welcome to our hep forum.
It is a valid question.......it won't be removed. I'll let you get answers from some of our other members as I am not a patient and can only guess at what I'd do.

Take care......thoughts and prayers............

Hi, Carol.  It would depend upon the type of hepatitis.  If you are getting immunized against A and B, then I think it would be reasonably safe to accept an organ with one of those.  However, if the organ has hep C...then absolutely not.  However, I don't believe that they would even accept lungs from a patient with hep C.  I have hep C and have read in the past that I cannot donate organs or blood.  However, I know that some livers are knowingly transplanted from patients with hep C to patients with liver disease, although it is a situation where the patient will die w/o a transplant immediately and that is all that is available at the time.

I wish you much success with a transplant!
