Hi, i am new here, i have made one other post. Now i am wondering if anyone else that has hep. c and cirrhosis has had or  having problems getting SSI. my mom has worked for a number of years putting money into social security and now that she really needs it they are giving her a hard time. they are saying she can still do cashier work yet my mom cant stay out of the hospital and is bigger than a 7 month pregnant woman. she also cant stand for long periods of time without swelling bigger and being in pain from the ascites and the fact that her body is not releasing any sodium. I really find this horrific. i called the guy and said since she has been denied she will have to file a reconsideration claim yet it seems like people who dont really need ssi are getting ssi. im really afraid if my mom dont get this she is gonna die soon. she has quite a few symptoms of ESLD and she is really bad. If she dies before SSI then we are gonna have to fight to bury her as she has no life insurance or anything. She was planning on paying for her cremation and service with some of the money and then use the rest to deal with her needs plus medicaid. i really dont think she is gonna get it and i believe this is downright unfair. we pay into it shouldnt we be able to get it. so any advice to get this rolling. please im scared and i am new at this.

Hello Worriedgirl , In answer to your question....yes..............almost everyone gets turned down the first time. Do reapply. Include any new symptons that she is experiencing. We all know that things can change very quickly for a liver patient. My husband got approved the 2nd time......we didn't need to get a lawyer either.

Hang in there..........you are not alone anymore. We have a lot of compassionate knowledgeable members.........thoughts and prayers.........

It is SSD, not SSI that you are applying for...although they do consider for SSI at the same time.  As PG said, most everyone gets turned down the first time and has to appeal...sometimes a number of times.  It took me 2 years to get it, and it was based on bilateral artificial hips with a left revision and hep C.  By the time I was approved, I had liver cancer.  You need to gather all the medical records your mom has, all the tests, doctor notes, everything from when she was first diagnosed!  Once you have all these, send them together with the forms for appeal.  Their decision is based on hard facts in the medical records, not so much on what is told to them by the applicant or person applying for her.  Hang in there--it's a long process, usually.  Not fair, but that's how it is.  If she gets turned down on appeal, get a lawyer.  You won't have to pay him anything unless she wins her case, and then it is 25% of her back pay, paid automatically to him by SS.

Also be aware that once she's approved for SSD she will have to reapply for medicaid. It's a sorry law that was put in to place to actually "let some slip through the cracks." Just take one thing at a time, but keep that in mind. Mary's benefits from medicaid came to a screeching halt when she got SSD. I researched and found out why. She just had to fill out a couple of forms that social services mailed to her. However, I found them online too. Stay in touch.

It won't necessarily take 2 yrs.  That's just how long it took me.  She should be able to get the SSI sooner, depending on her current financial status.  Just don't give up.  That's what they want you to do!

my mother had to jump through hoops and had to get an attorney to get her ssi, she is in the same situation, EXACTLY and then it took her being diagnosed as terminal to qualify for medicade. i am sorry the proccess is long and frustrating, just hang in there
