Hello everyone,

I am usually on the Arthritis forum but I was recently diagnosed with fatty liver disease due to type 2 diabetes, being overweight and using Methotrexate.
I'm terrified.  I know this forum is for Hepatitis but if there is anyone who also has NASH or has any info, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Raven

Raven, welcome to the forum!  Actually, this site is for people with any type of liver disease.

Your doctor has probably already told you that the main treatment is weight loss.  Close control of your sugar levels is also crucial.  NASH can possibly lead to cirrhosis, over time.  Basically, NASH is not as serious as other liver diseases, so there is no need to panic.

I will say that diet is probably just as important for you as for me with hep C.  Try to avoid red meat, as the liver has a difficult time processing it, and increase your fresh or frozen vegetable intake.  Since fruit contains fructose, your intake of that would depend on your sugar levels.  I can't recall if we have any other members with NASH, but if they see this I'm sure they will have something to add.

Hugs,

Connie

Hi Raven - My mother was diagnosed with fatty liver.  She went in to have her gallbladder removed and they saw that her liver had adhered itself to her gallbladder and they couldn't remove it because they were afraid she would lose to much blood.  She also has diabetes.  This all happened about 5 or 6 years ago.

She sees a GI doc and he has done a good job with her meds and she really watches her diet.  Since her diagnosis she has her liver levels tested about twice a year and has a cat scan once a year.  So far she has not gotten any worse.

Her biggest problem is she can't eat much protein.  It makes her sick and very lethargic.  (she is not much of meat eater anyway so not a big problem).  She is on diuretics and Lactulose.  She is tired alot and she does get a little disoriented and forgetful occasionally.  If she takes her lactulose regularly then she is good.  But sometimes she won't take it because she has company or she is staying with someone and she is embarrsed about the side effects (gas, diarrhea, lots of trips to the bathroom).  But is it vital that she take it.  The gasses or ammonia builds up and goes to her brain and causes her confusion.

I am not very technical someone else here will probably have more technical info.

All I know is when my mom was diagnosed I freaked out.  The surgeon came out and asked me how much my mom drank.  I laughed because I thought it was a joke.  She NEVER drank...ever.  He thought she was a drinker because of her liver.

However, with the right meds, the right doc and the right food...she is doing great.

Hang in there.
Cheryl

For the curious, this is a great link to a picture of the liver, gallbladder, and biliary system:

Thank you hep93 and caw. This whole thing has me freaked out. I am also having major issues with constipation and am taking lactulose as well. I'm wondering if this is associated with fatty liver. I'm seeing my family doctor on Thursday as this was Dx at emergency following a CT scan. He is going to send me to a surgeon.
Thanks again and I'll keep you posted!

Raven, more likely your constipation is related to the Oxycontin you are taking.  Calcium can also be constipating.

Connie

I know the oxy causes constipation but the funny thing is, its not usually a problem. It seems that when I increase my fruit intake, especially melon or oranges it happens. It's off topic anyway but this fatty liver has me so scared. I'm not sure if I should stop taking meds and I'm anxious to see the MD.

Have you tried increasing your water and fiber intake?  Hopefully, you will get some of your questions answered when you see your doctor.  Write them down, so you won't forget!
