I have known for many years my father had Hepatitis C. He is in the prison system due to a stupid arguement with my step mom. Needless to say She has divorced him and I am the only child he has. He has 3 years left in the system and I do not want him to die there.

The prison system called to tell me to get to Atlanta ASAP my father was in the hospital. I knew he was to have surgery for a hernia but that was it. I get up there and there was no doctor to be found and all they tell me is to talk to the Sgt. he says talk to the Dr.

The doctor finally calls me back and tells me my father has End Stage Liver Failure. The family was called in that is me. How much longer does he have? I ask. Dr. said, up to 6 months.  My father does not drink alchol anymore and has not smoked in about 2 months.

He is swollen, yellow and conversation with him is vague and lack of information.

Please any suggestions are appreciated.

Shanie, thank you for starting a new topic, as I had suggested.  In your previous post, I don't believe you mentioned that your dad is in the prison system.  This could affect any possible treatment, as he will have to be treated wherever they tell him.  As PG suggested, there is a lot of information in the Hepatitis Resources folder.  Since every case is different, it's virtually impossible to say how long someone has left to live.  I was diagnosed with hep C in '93.  In '05, I was diagnosed with liver cancer and was treated at Mayo for that.  And I'm still here.  Just spend as much time as you can with him, which I know may be difficult.

Hugs,

Connie

My husband is a patient at Mayo and they are great. Yes, My father does not have a choice in Dr's but his Dr. seems to be the best in the hospital according to my research. As long as he is in the hospital and not in the prison. I would love nothing more than for them to release him to me...But I am fighting for that too.

contact the director of the health system... find out where the medical records are... and ask for copies...
I work as a volunteer in prison reentry... and deal with prison health system all the time... get ur phone number to the doctor if u can... also he probably has a case manager too... be persistent... contact the warden... when I deal with the prison system I shot gun blast it until I get the info I need... it can be a cumbersome system... and I deal with people who are released with no insulin, no meds etc.. and having to get records quickly...
take care...

My father has been moved from the hospital and back to the medical ward. He seems to be the same as he was I just can't wait until tomorrow to talk to some on at the facility. I have hope. I will be talking to the Dr tomorrow..Yay...I have been thanking God all day that he made me hard headed and determined.

Hi all,

My dad seems to be experiencing liver failure. He has liver cancer following Hepatitis C and is not a candidate for a transplantation. He has been nauseous and throwing up. He has noticeable jaundice. He sleeps a lot and does not seem to be himself. I am worried about elevated ammonia levels as had happened a few months back. This forum has been helpful to read as this is a very difficult time. It is very hard since he has been sick for over decades and I don't know what to do or expect at this time and seeing him change so dramatically all of a sudden.

Blue7, welcome to the forum.  I'd like to ask that you start a new thread of your own and post your situation in that.  You picked up on an old thread and you will get more replies if you start your own topic.  Just click on New Topic instead of Reply.

Thanks!
