I will try to make this brief......last August, I was laid off and have been unable to find work. My husband is currently receiving SSI benefits, and my question is this. If I continue to receive unemployment benefits (which greatly depends on congress passing an extension and we will not go there), and go back to school, would any grants, etc that I receive have to be counted as income as well? If so, that could greatly impact my husband's SSI standings, etc......any thoughts would be welcome! Thanks!

His hepatologist is in the process of appealing to Medicaid to get him approved for transplant so they can get him listed again. So, I just don't need to have one more thing add to the issues we have been having getting him back on the list

Mer, that's an interesting question.  Offhand, I would say that grants or loans should not be considered income.  You don't have to pay income taxes on them, do you?  However, you never know with SSI what rules they have.  Maybe someone else can answer more definitively, or you can research it online.  Or, last resort, call the 800 # for SS and ask them directly.

Hugs,

Connie

Yes grants and loans can be considered income... now it depends... that is I know local social services do include them.. however... there may be a guideline as to how much or it may not be considered at all.... may consider the grant and not the loan.. or maybe the amount after school expenses are accounted for... this would be a good question for the school... or talk directly to social security and ask for help...

Hey mer... why be brief.... anyways I looked... now I don't think they do... I researched it... couldn't find anything definitive on the website... but calling social security is your best bet... you can just say you have a general question...

Thanks......I will give them a call. It just seems like anytime I call them, they put us under a microscope....LOL! Thanks for looking into it, and I will keep my research into it going....hope you are all well!

Mer, that's why I suggested the 800 #, not your local office or caseworker.  In case you don't have it, the SS nationwide number is 1-800-772-1213.  As Arneeb suggested, just say you have a general question.  And let us know what you find out!

Connie

Okay, I just got off the phone with social security. At first they told me that it would count as income and resource for the household, but only for the one month that the grant money is issued. Then, he corrected himself and stated that Pell Grants, etc are NOT counted as income. So, sounds like if I do go to school, I should be good to go without risking my husband's SSI and Medicaid being cut off......now just to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!!! LOL! I have done the same thing for 20 years and am taking care of my family, etc and I have no idea what I want to study, so this is a little scary and exciting for me at the same time. I have a great wealth of understanding from the liver disease aspect, so maybe something in the medical field....LOL!

Mer, think of things that interested you as a child.  Perhaps your answer lies somewhere there.

I'm glad to hear that grants, etc., for education would not negatively affect SSI/Medicaid.  I didn't think it should.

Connie

and research on food stamps shows they don't for there either... key about loans is whether you are going to defer payments or not... so be careful about those.. if you defer payments until graduation.. then not considered income... weird huh... but I would check this information more than once... you would not want to have everything ready and realize the person who gave you the info to begin with was wrong.. also be very careful when filling out your FASA federal student aid forms... but get on doing it ... and congrats..

Thanks for the info arnee! I already filled out the FAFSA......so, I hope I did not mess anything up! I did go talk to the advisors today and did find out what courses I need to complete to knock out the rest of my core courses, etc. Next, I have to meet with admissions and financial aid. So, inching more toward this big step!!

On another note, got a call from our transplant coordinator, and she still had not gotten the approval back yet from Medicaid on my husband's transplant status. His MELD is really low, but the treatment for the HepC is not a viable option for him since he had such a bad reaction to it. So, just in the waiting game. He just sleeps alot right now, but I guess that's what he needs to do. He's not as confused or anything, just sleeping alot

don't worry about the FASA.. if u inputted the wrong data can fix.. pretty quickly.. one of the gals that I work withwho is mentally ill put in just any ole numbers to begin with and they actually just had her do it a few times more until they go the right ones... it was almost funny.. she just put a number in... I was there when she did it.. and she just refused.. and actually it was ok because then the date of the application was the date she put in those numbers... I tell you... sorry about your partner.. I know it was so hard for me to make decisions when Mike was going through that.. at the end I passed on an excellent job... cuz I just couldn't leave him for 12 hours and that was what that job would entail... and even now I'm reeling from the financial aspects... and seem to be tumbling down a hill and can't stop... but eventually it will.. hope to be helpful... you'll do fine... just balance everythign carefully and take care of yourself.. but remember to enjoy all those "special" moments... God will give you the strength as you go... u r always in my prayers and thoughts.. Sandi

Thank you, Sandi! Yes, last August when I lost my job, I was devastated. But, in hindsight it was probably the best thing that happened, if that makes any sense. I was working full time, the only source of income, taking care of a sick husband and raising our 5 year old. But, when that happened, my husband was haveing seizures constantly, so I really could not leave him alone for long periods of time. We now have his seizures under control so I do feel better about leaving him alone for longer periods. God just has a way of working things out, huh?? Just need to trust him!

Mer, I just heard on the news today that the unemployment benefits extension proposal didn't pass, but goes to another vote in a month. When does your benefit run out?

Connie, my benefits ran out last week. I am hoping that something will happen quickly! They are supposedly going to re-vote when the senate returns from their recess on the 12th. The house did finally pass a measure that would extend benefits, but senate had already recessed for the 4th of July break.

Ahh. Maybe they said "next month" instead of "a month." I hope it all goes in your favor!

Thanks, Connie! Me, too! I haven't explained alot of this to my husband primarily because he probably would not remember what I told him, and also no need to stress him out, too.....
