Hi Everyone
I am a fiance for a man that has cirrohis and Hep C.  In the last six months he has become increasingly legargic, irratable, foggy, dizzy, light headed and forgetful.  Finally when this didn't pass I got him to go to the doc. today.  After considering all the symptoms of course doc ordered blood work.  Doc suggested elevated ammonia. Fiance had taken a course of lactalose in the past and his condition cleared.  But having read the posts on here I am now really concerned that maybe the lactalose will not correct the problem in all incidents.
What should I be asking the docs?  He might be anemic as well.  Should know more in a bit with the results.  Is there anything I can do in the meantime?  I am really scared now.  He is a fairly young man at only 57.
Thanks for any advice :-)

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately he probably needs to be taking the lactulose on a regular basis. The lactulose is a binding medication that clears the toxins out of his system. Ammonia levels affect everyone differently, but if the toxins continue to build in his system it could become a very serious issue.

Is he being seen by a hepatologist?? If not, he really needs to be seen by a hepatologist. You hang in there and don't forget to take care of you.

Remember, welcome to the forum! I am very sorry to hear that your fiance is ill. I can only echo what Mer has suggested. You might also ask about adding Xifaxan to the Lactulose. You will receive a lot of information and support here. Also, read the info in the Hepatitis Resources folder at the top of the page. When you get the results of the blood work, you will know more. Has he ever been treated for the hep C?
