My husband called me while a go and said his legs were swollen and he has developed a red rash on his legs. He said behind his knee cap and down the back of his leg. I'm at work so I can't describe it but he said it does not itch. Any thoughts on this and what do I need to look for when I get home? I know if there is heat it could be inflammation or blood clot? But do certain types of rashes indicate heart problems in addition to liver failure?
Thanks for any advice!

SW, it sounds like something vascular, but I don't know about heart problems.  Do take a look when you can.  As you said, if there's heat that might mean trouble.  Would he agree to be seen by a doctor for this?

Connie

Yes, he will go to the Doctor if need be. I'm going to look at it when I get home. What I've read says something about a hard rash vs. a soft rash etc... and they mean different things. I also read something about right sided heart failure is associated with rashes on swollen legs, but you know how the internet is. It could be a cause of many things so I don't want to overreact, but at the same time I don't know how serious this could be. This disease is so frusterating because nothing is ever cut and dried! Always guessing it seems....
Thanks Connie, I will log on later and try to give more info on it..

It sounds like my former situation. The last 6 months when my liver was in free fall, both my ankles and legs were swollen, itchy and red. I couldn't bend my legs they were so full of fluid. Toward the end, I was hospitalized twice. The second time, with daily IVs of albumin and lasix over a 6 day period, I lost 27 pounds of fluid in my legs. Three days later, I had a transplant. Unlike fluid in ones belly, they can't drain your legs. Also in my case, my doc limited me to a half litre of water per day. Time to call your doctor.

Well, I looked at his legs. It looks like the swelling is moving up his legs and right now it is moving up toward his thighs. The rash does not look like a rash to me. It looks like little red dots from his feet all the way to his thigh. They look kind of blotchy. He also said he drank 3 beers yesterday and only urinated twice all day. Says he is taking his water pills but they don't seem to be working. He won't go to the Dr. this week. Says he'll go the middle of next week. Wants to try not drinking this weekend to see if it helps. He always does this, tries to cut back or slow down as he calls it, and thinks that will fix everything. Do you think it is his kidneys shutting down, or is this the liver causing the swelling? His pee is orange too. Can anybody tell me where we are in this viscous cycle? I am at my wits end and don't know what to expect next....
I know some of you get tired of the same old story and I don't blame you but it sure does help to hear from you!

I suspect his kidney function is being compromised by his liver disease (hepatorenal syndrome.)  Also, diuretics are hard on the kidneys.  The edema could be a combination of both liver disease and kidney dysfunction.  Even if he stops drinking for a few days and things improve a little...as soon as he resumes drinking everything will go haywire again.  He simply hasn't accepted that his drinking is causing his problems.  rolleyes    And he may get to the point where stopping is done too late.  Go read KelliBelli's last post to get an idea of what your guy is in for.

Hugs,

Connie

Sadwife,

My hubby had issues with a "rash". Another lovely side affect from the HepC that can develop is a form of vasculitis. Do take him to get it checked out, but basically when the vasculitis flares up, the autoimmune system goes on the defense and starts attacking itseld (antibodies, antigens). When it fully flares up it can be extremely painful. The treatment for it is steroids, basically to keep the immune system at bay. However, my hubby developed a very severe psychosis from being on the prednisone for so long, and ended up having chemo treatment with a chemo drug (I cannot think of the name of it right now, but it was a miracle drug).

Your hubby may not have this, but I did want to bring it to your attention and be on the lookout for it. I would definitely get him in w/ the doc and have it checked out. Any questions, I would be happy to answer them!

Mer, as far as I know, SW's hubby doesn't have hep C.  It's alcohol related liver disease.

No, he does not have Hep C, you are correct. Last night right before I went to bed he said if it was not better today, he would go...we will see. Thank you all for the responses. That's kind of what I thought was happening but I didn't know for sure. And I know how serious it is so I'm trying to stay calm and level headed about it.... Rick, your post was very helpful as well. It's great to hear from the guys on this site...I'm going to give him a swift kick today as you suggested. :)
We love our men but why oh why do they have to be so hard headed! .....And yes Connie, you are right too...he has not accepted the fact that his alcohol is killing him, even though he's been told multiple times. Another thing that was odd yesterday was that he said he was so hungry. Said he ate 2 sandwiches, and then ate supper last night! He hasn't ate more than one meal a day in a long time. Also said he had quite a bit of elimination on 2 occasions as well?? I just wonder if this is another sign that his body is shutting down?? Man, I can see why people write a book about this disease....................
I will stay in touch and let you all know what's going on as much as I can in the next couple of days.
Again, so nice to know you are only a "click" away!
Thanks!!!

Well, Maybe i can find out what our problem is, I can tell you! IF I can get him to go. I'm at work right now and haven't heard from him yet but I'm wondering if he'll agree to go. I'm wondering if his Dr. is going to put him in the hospital or just try to increase his diuretics....Either way he is not urinating so I know something is going to give....I'll let you know as we progress.
