i,am i smoker,still smoking i,ve only had one shot.i have to admit its starting to make me feel lousey when i do smoke but quitting isn,t the easiest thing to do.iam also feeling guilty.something someone had said on this site keeps running through my mind..listen to your body..what has anyone heard about smoking on treatment? clily

believe me,i know how hard it is to quit smoking. after 20 yrs of smoking and had reached almost 3 pks a day,i quit last summer,,,actually i quit a week before coming down extremely sick with acute hep b ,,,,i dont know the affects of smoking and the treatments,but i do know that smoking is just as bad for your liver as drinking,,so id say to optimize your treatment,you should try to quit,,,to help your liver fight. i used the little thin licorice,omg,im not sure the spelling of that,,and my brain is too fuzzy to think tonight lol i also had popcorn always close,as it doesnt have cholesterol,,and it keeps the hands busy. summertime would be easier to quit.because ya can keep busy with so many things...i know its rough,but set a date,and put cigs down,not for anyone but yourself,,,,,,,your health with improve,your pocketbook will stay full longer(or the money used for more fun things:) and believe it or not,one of the things that i absolutely LOVE about not smoking,is my clothes and hair smell good,,,all day long! good luck clily,and if ya try this for yaself,,ill be here to help as much as possible :)

Smoking inhibits healing. I was told to stop before my first hip replacement. I didn't do it then, but during an emergency revision 3 weeks later and 2 months in the hospital, I managed to quit. They gave me patches from the first day and every day until about 2 days before I was discharged. I bought patches twice--so used them for another month. When it was time to buy them again, I decided to see if I could get by without them and I did fine. It's been 3 1/2 years now, smokefree. I don't think I could have done it so easily without the patches and being in the hospital. I had smoked for over 40 years, 2 packs a day for at least the last 20 years of smoking. I REALLY wanted to stop and had tried a couple of times, but never lasted longer than 3 weeks prior to the last time.

 thanks for the feedback..i guess your confirming what i already figured.i mean who would think smoking could or would be healthy in any situtation.but i guess i was hoping to here don,t worry about it! ok ok i know.just tell me ..get back to reality.time for me to just do it QUIT!! man i,am havin such a hard time with it.i,ll try some of your ideas.thanks clily

Clily, I forgot to mention that I had also tried Wellbutrin, but I could not take it twice a day--wired me up so much I couldn't sleep.  You can use the patch and Wellbutrin together.  It would be better than either one taken alone.  There is now a nasal spray that seems to work well, and also nicotine gum, etc.  All of these measures (except the Wellbutrin) replace some of the nicotine you would get from cigarettes, so you don't have such awful physical withdrawals.  You will find a brochure in the patches package, and probably in the others, as well.  They offer multiple suggestions.  It doesn't take long to get past the physical addiction.  You start out with the highest mg. of nicotine or the 2nd highest, depending on how much you smoke, and then taper off with patches of lesser strengths.  Here are some suggestions for replacing the habit of smoking and to help you as you are quitting.  (I still use a lot of hard candy.)
 
Chew sugarless gum.  Since I smoked menthol cigarettes, I was helped with anything minty.  Use sugar free hard candy.  Cinnamon or peppermint worked best for me.  Go for a walk or jog.  Exercise helps.  Drink a lot of water.  If you always have a cigarette with coffee, and don't think you can drink coffee without a cigarette--skip the coffee.  If you have an urge to smoke, take a shower instead.  Keep your hands wet by mopping, cleaning, doing dishes.  Do some slow, deep breathing.  Very slowly breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth.  This lessens tension and helps you to focus on your breaths, so you are not thinking of a cigarette.  If possible, get a smoking buddy for support--someone that wants to also stop smoking.  If there is second-hand smoke in the house from other smokers, ask that they smoke outside while you are trying to quit.  Each day or week, put the money you would have spent on cigarettes into a jar.  Use it for patches or a personal treat, such as a manicure or movie.
 
I hope these suggestions help, but I'm sure you will also discover some of your own.
