Like trish said I do not have a viral hepatitis. Mine was caused through my body rejecting my liver. The symptoms do not become obvious until quite a lot of damage is done to the liver, in my case cirrhosis. My liver specialist says I may have had AIH for up to 20 years, before I became aware I was unwell. By the time I was diagnosed, (it took about 5 - 6 weeks) I was in liver failure.
Fortunately there are medications that keep AIH under control, although not cured. Prednisone is not a good medication long term. but it is the only one available at the moment. I am really hoping the herbs and acupuncture will continue to make a difference, and one day I will be off the steroids, and their not so good side effects.
Jeff, I hope and pray you are given good advice and are able to make the right choice. Your wife and girls need you, as you say. And I can understand you wanting to fish in heaven in the long and distant future.
A positive attitude, healthy living and the correct medical care should have a positive effect on your life.
Take care and good luck with the liver doctor.
PS. I just read your opening post again. I have a "happy needle" in my ear at the moment, (given by my acupuncturist). It is amazing for depression. I am also taking a herb to make me "calm and peaceful all the time" Dr. Chen said. Can't remember it's name. I'll ask him again next visit.
