Hi everyone:

I'm new here, I have AIH, diagnosed in 1993, I'm 36 years old. Now I'm in stage 4, and that is so scary to me. I take Imuran, I stragle with fatigue, lately I have pain all around my liver and my back but my labs are all OK. I don't know what to do. My fatigue gets worse and worse.

any suggestion or ideas
Thank you

Welcome, Joanne!  I don't have AIH, though there are quite a few here who do.  I have chronic active hep C and liver cancer, and can definitely relate to the fatigue.  It is getting worse and worse.  In '93 I went to part-time work, and in 2005 I was awarded Soc. Sec. Disability.  I have things I want and need to do, but instead I end up sleeping all day.  If anyone has a remedy for that, I'd love to hear it!

Welcome Joanne

I have AIH but was only recently diagnosised this past year. The only thing that has ever helped the extreme fatigue that I know you are feeling is the prednisone. I am sure you already know that the pred itself causes other problems but I seem to be able to function better with it than without it. I only took Imuran for about a month and had horrible side effects from it so at this point I am not taking it. It did however seem to increase my fatigue and worsen it even with the pred. I wish I knew of something that could help this problem, all I can say is that there are people here that understand what you are going through.

Thank you Connie and Lucy for the e-mail.

Lucy, I'm doing OK with Imuran, not alot of side effect, it is just the fatigue that I'm struging with. I did very well with prednisone too, but my Dr. stopped it. can you tell me what the Dr. told you about what to eat and what not to eat or Vitamins and do you take any herbal supplement?

None of my doctors has ever said anything about diet or supplements. I have told them that I take Cascara Sagrada for constipation, as well as a multivitamin, vitamins C and E.

On other boards, I've seen milk thistle recommended for hep C. I took it in the very beginning (93), but it caused diarrhea and a sore behind. I've also seen distilled water recommended, but I just use bottled spring water and make sure there are no additives.

Just avoid any drugs that are known to irritate the liver, and alcohol in any form.

Joanne

My doctor had never given me any diet to follow however he has told me to stay away from vitamins and mineral supplements. He says that they are hard for the liver to process. Most of the directives in diet he has given me are in relation to prednisone, stay away from added salt and watch the amount of sugars I eat.
There is another lady on this forum that does do herbal treatments. Hopefully she will be able to tell you some of things that may be helpful to you.
Hope you have a healthy day today.

MDchronie:
are you a Dr.? you seem very knowledgable.
I have a question for you? when I was diagnosed with AIH 15 years ago, I was between stage 3 and 4, that is mean cirrhoses. My AIH is in remission now.
my question is: even though it is in remission(no longer active), I will still need transplant down the road because I have cirrhoses, or I can lead a normal life like how I did these 15 years. I'm 36 years old now, My labs are all normal, CT scan is normal so far.

I appreciate answring my question, or any one else who have knowledge about this.
