My mother has Hepatitis C, fibroses degree 4-6 and she has already been doing 2 therapies with interferon and ribavirin, each for 11 months, but both not successful.
Now, she has been taking "Peg Intron" for already 3 years (once a week, 0,5 ml).
Doctors always told us, that she can takt it for the next few years, but now her doctor suggested to stop it for half a year, in order to see how her liver develops.
We are so scared, that this will make it worse...Please, does anyone have experience with long term therapies? Is it really necessary to stop taking it? We live in Germany and we belive that it might be a measure of cost saving from the insurrance companies...
I'm glad about each answer!! Thank you!

Hi, Gabi, and welcome! I've never heard of anyone staying on any of these drugs for longer than a year, so I don't believe that stopping Peg Introl for a while is due to insurance cost. If it does not seem to be helping, then a potent chemical is being given to your mother without medical justification. However, this is just my "take" on it. Perhaps someone here has personal experience with long-term hep C treatment, beyond the norm.
