I frequent another thread on here for Gerd.  I have been taking medication (PPIs) for this condition for many years with symptoms creeping up and becoming worse over the past year or so.  Anyhow, I think its from the meds.  My doctor (GI) thinks I now have IBS in addition to gerd.  I don't doubt the I have "IBS" However, I want to know why?!?!  And I want to fix it!  Here are my symptoms...I suffer from these at least a few times a week...please help...I just really want to to fix it, and if I have to switch meds, I will.

- Abdominal pains - severe at times!  To the point where I don't want to eat!
- Gas - severe at times
- Bloating - severe at times

The abdominal cramps are constant and can be mild to moderate to sever depending on the day...

Thats really it.  I go to the bathroom regularly, but I do still feel constipated.  My GI suggested cutting out dairy, but I really don't think thats the issue...I go days without dairy and I drink soy milk.  Many of you prob are not farmiliar, but I have heard that use of PPIs for Gerd can cause excess bacteria build up in the intestines over time due to lack of stomach acid to kill bacterias in foods.  Anyhow, I'm wondering if this may be the issue so I started eating Activia.  Has anyone had success with this?  Is it strong enough?

Any feedback would be so much appreciated.  Sorry for the long thread and thanks in advance.  Trying to get my normal painfree life back where I can actually eat without worrying :(

Could be excessive bacteria - they tend to start chowing down in the intestine and produce lots of gas in the process. The Activia may help, give it a couple weeks. Also you might try a probiotic formula that has Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria species (in a pill form) to see if that helps (although you should keep in mind that the initial few days of taking a probiotic may result in some increased gas - which will resolve). How often is "regular" for you, bathroom-wise? Have you ever had a scope?

Thanks for the response.  I go to the bathroom at least once sometimes 2x a day.  I have been seeing a GI doc for almost ten days.  Im totally frustrated with docs at this point.  No one wants to try to get rid of the problem or control it naturally, they just want to mask the sypmptoms with prescriptions that have other side affects.  Sorry to rant.  I have had a scope.  One most recently in November.  Everything was fine!  No bacteria in my stomach which she thought could have been the issue.  Anyhow, are probiotics usually like one pill or a bunch of pills?  I just want to make sure I take the right thing.  Thanks!
