HELP!!!!!!!! sad

Monday night i had a chicken sandwich. I went home and had severe diarrhea. The next day I woke up and felt very bloated, and then was constipated throughout the entire day! It was horrible!!!!!!!!!
By Tuesday evening 11p.m. i went out to purchase phospho-soda. I had one tablespoon with about 10oz. of water. I went to bed and woke up at 5:30a.m. and had severe diarrhea again. It is now Thursday and i have gone to the washroom prob. every 40 min to an hour. and if i eat.....well lets just say it's not too pretty.

HELP! How long does this phosph-soda stay in my system? OR is this something else that i should get checked out? Perhaps i have a stomach virus or IBS! This is really interfering with my life. My poor wife!

Please help me with any suggestions

Ooooh, I'd definitely recommend staying away from the Phospho-Soda unless it's been SEVERAL days of constipation. "Skipping a day" really isn't abnormal in the grand scheme of things, and taking that stuff will undoubtedly make most people have severe diarrhea. Do you normally have problems with your bowels? Do you take any medications? When you say "this is interfering with my life," do you mean your life just in the past few days?

It's impossible to say what it is for sure, of course. But I'd recommend taking NO food, only clear liquids like broth and tea, until tomorrow afternoon and see how you do. Having a couple days of diarrhea is not the end of the world for most people but you'll want to make sure you keep your fluid intake up so you don't get dehydrated. As long as you're peeing, you're probably OK in that regard. Let us know how you're doing tomorrow.

When I get like that I take one Dulcolax and it gets things moving and gets rid of the bloat. I wouldn't ever take Phospho-soda except for a colonoscopy. Better to take a light laxative or stool softener but I would still give it more than a day but one Dulcolax won't hurt.

I've had to use phospho-soda so many times, at least 7, for colonoscopies and colon surgeries. It's brutal! So I'd never willingly take that stuff unless a doctor ordered it either. It's very harsh on your system.

I take 50 mg of Colace each night after dinner and it's very, very gentle. While I've never struggled with C, since I had rectal cancer, 15 inches removed from my lower colon and my sigmoid taken out, my surgeon suggested Colace to keep my stool somewhat regular (I go all day long, as long as I keep eating).

You could try Colace. I prefer the 50 mg dose since it's very low (actually Pediatric I was told) but you could take 2 a day, 12 hours apart too and that may help you. All I know is the Colace is very, very gentle.

I wish you well but my advice is to refrain from the Phospho-soda also.

Did you take anything for the inital bout of diarrhea? Immodium at full strength constipates the heck out of me; I can only take 1/2 pill at a time or I go from D to C in a heartbeat.

thanks for the helpful info, only now i ully understand what phospho-soda really does/is. the should label the product correctly as it say: "for the relief of occasional constipation". well min was occasional, and maybe there should be some sort of warning label on this stuff

thanks once again

First of all you might want to see a GI doctor if this keeps occuring. I have IBS-C and I've had a colonoscopy twice and an endoscopy 3 times. They said I have GERD, a small hiatal hernia and some small inflamation. My GI doc said it was okay if I didn't move my bowels for a few days as long as I did not have any pain. She did say if I'm constipated all the time (many days at a time) that I should take over the counter Miralax which I just bought today and I'm going to try tonight. I went to their website and they claim it does not cause bloating or cramping and its very soothing so hopefully it will work for me. There was a time I was constipated for 2 weeks and my doctor told me to drink a half a bottle of magnesium citrate and NOT to drink the phospho-soda. She said if I didn't have a bowel movement that evening then I should drink the rest in the morning. It worked within a couple hours and I went 3 times that night and 1 time the next morning. She said the magnesium citrate would work better and not cause any bloating or cramping. Now this might not work for all people but it did work great for me. So if you keep having problems, you really should see a GI doc and if you have IBS or GERD or something else they may put you on some medication to help. I currently take Nexium for the GERD and Librax for the IBS and so far they work fine.
