Out of curiosity, I once weighed myself before and after a normal bowel movement and there was a 2-pound difference. You probably weigh more when you're constipated because you have the weight of waste in there that you're not getting out.

Also, people who are constipated tend to have distended abdomens both because of the backed-up waste matter in their intestines (which can make the abdomen hard), and because they are worse to have gas bloat because it's harder to expel the gas due to being backed up. So that can cause clothes to suddenly not fit.

In either case, this is not considered real weight gain because you're not gaining any fat or muscle. Just as people who are retaining fluids are not really "gaining weight", even though their weight goes up. Get the fluids off, get the fecal matter out, get rid of the gas, and you go back to being your true size.

If your belly is hard, then yes, that's gas that's trapped in there, swelling it out (although you still might not be going to the bathroom enough to have cleared up anything that's backed up in there).

Have you tried OTC medicines like Gas-X?

I have IBS-C as well, and what has really really helped me is taking Magnesium and Ester C supplements on a daily basis. You need to take a fairly health dose and after a few days things should start moving regularly. This has made a BIG difference in my life

I agree with the suggestion of taking fiber supplements, and you might get some relief from an over-the-counter gas reliever - not sure what the brands are in the UK but a pharmacist should be able to help you out with that. If your stomach is very hard and you feel very ill you should consider seeing your doctor. A rock-hard tummy isn't usually normal although when you are bloated this can occur...let us know how it goes.

Hi JamieLee,

I am Kitt and I also have IBS.  I have to take mega dose of  fibercon daily and then I can still be bloated for days.  Try to increase your fluids and stay away from constipating foods.

Just a note, I read your posts but sometimes I don't understand your abbreviations...........any chance you could write out some of the words.  Could be just me as others seem to be doing fine. :-) Thanks sweetie and keep posting.
